The Bethel girls ran one of the fastest flat track 4x400 meter relay times in the nation with their 3:51.96 victory at the state meet. The New Balance Nationals this upcoming weekend will be their first opportunity to run faster on a banked track (at the New York Armory), which has the Bethel quartet thinking of breaking their own school record (3:48.91 at 2009 Virginia Tech Invite) and potentially the Virginia high school indoor state record of 3:46.91 by the 2006 Landstown squad at the indoor nationals. Photo by John Herzog       Amanda Smith in her first year at Grassfield High school, has accomplished more than most people accomplish in their entire high school year. The freshman from Chesapeake made her mark on the eastern region and the state early in her career, and has come out blazing again this year.       One of the many girls in recent years to win state championships in their freshmen year, Smith will look to carry her success into her sophmore year this year. Off to a good start, the Grassfield sophomore has clocked a 1:17.35 in the 500 meter, and has experimented with the 1000 meter run. With a 3:01.68 performance alone at the Southeastern Invitational Smith has earned herself a spot on the national rankings list, and is currently number two in the state behind Midlothian’s Paige Johnston. Western Branch senior Jeffrey Artis got out quick in the 110 meter hurdles finals at the Eastern Region and never looked backed as he dusted off a strong field with the state's first sub 14 second clocking in the event at 13.99, which ranks among the top 20 in the country. (Photo by Andy Paisley) The wind tunnel known as Sports Backers Stadium did not deter Midlothian senior Jason Witt from motoring around the track for four laps in fierce winds to throw down a statement making and meet record breaking 4:12.23 in the 1600 meter run. He later came back for a second win in the 800 meter run in 1:57.07 with a narrow win over Robert Reynolds of Lee-Davis.  The Southeastern District Meet could be a Western Branch show with the potential of Bruins coach Ryan Carroll to have both individual and team champions in the boys and girls races. The Western Branch girls have looked sharp this fall as a team that could possibly represent the Eastern Region well beyond the regional meet onto Great Meadow.
