The final Eastern Region Cross Country Championships will be held Thursday, November 1st at Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake. It has been tough for any Eastern Region team over recent years to beat any cross country squad produced by coach Mike Nestor at Ocean Lakes. The Ocean Lakes cross country program will attempt to make it a sweep of the team titles for the third consecutive year.
After letting go of his first love sport of soccer, Kellam senior Billy Boros has really come on strong in his new love sport of running since last indoor track season when he placed 9th in the 1600 meter run as a first time individual state qualifier. The Eastern Region cross country champion last week in a 5K PR of 15:57, Boros should have no problem managing the hills at Great Meadow as shown with his strong finishes earlier in the season at the Maymont Festival and Albemarle Invitational as he aims for a top 10 finish in the Group AAA race on Saturday.
At the 2012 Eastern Region Meet, 1-2 individual finishes were enjoyed by the Ocean Lakes girls with Nicole Park and Olivia Bethune as well as the Kellam boys with Billy Boros and David Gregory. The Hickory boys kept Ocean Lakes from sweeping the team titles for a third year in a row in the final Eastern Region Cross Country Championships.
Sean McGorty and the Chantilly boys are not slowing down in championship season, but instead taking it up even another notch after steam rolling through invitational season as the top ranked runner and team in Group AAA. Sophie Chase and the Lake Braddock girls are similarly establishing themselves as firm #1's in Group AAA, but West Springfield's Caroline Alcorta was not too far behind Chase at their district meet and the Oakton girls will race head-to-head with Braddock for the first time this week at the Northern Region Championships.
