Northern Virginia Invite - Day 1 Highlights Apr 14, 2012

Looks to be another deep year for the girls 3200 meter run in Virginia with two more girls breaking 11 minutes this spring on Friday at the Northern Virginia Invitational with two sophomores in West Springfield's Carolina Alcorta (10:54.67) and Robert E. Lee's Bailey Kolonich (10:57.20) battling it out for first in the race with Alcorta ultimately the winner. Thomas Edison sophomore Louis Colson won the 3200 convincingly for the boys in 9:31 and was followed by two much much improved runners producing big PR runs in Yorktown's Ryan Hart (9:38) and Lake Braddock's Alex Corbett (9:39).   Another Edison excelled on their home track in jumper Anna Williams, who leaped to one of the state's better marks in the triple jump in this young outdoor season with her leap of 37'11" at the Northern Virginia Invitational. Shaquera Leach, a Group AA state title contender at 400 meters from Briar Woods High School, won her specialty with ease in her 57.22 clocking. Leach also showed versatility with a victory in the high jump at a clearance of 5 feet. Westfield's Nathan Kiley finished second to Rajee Dunbar from Gonzaga in DC, but was pulled along to another swift low 49 second performance this season at 49.15 (ran 49.01 last week at the Leslie Sherman Memorial Invite) as he seeks for his first sub 49.   The Lake Braddock girls faired well in the technical events with sophomore Rachel Fasana clearing a personal best height of 10'3" in the pole vault, while junior Jennie Fofi edged out a pair of Thomas Edison hurdles for first place in the 100 meter hurdles at a 15.55 clocking to drop 7 tenths off her previous all-time best.   Northern Virginia Invitational - Day 1 Results
