3A Girls Race Summary: The Blacksburg girls were one of the strongest favorites to win in their races this weekend, so the challenge for them was to see how dominant of a win that they could produce for US top 10 ranked squad. After a strategic slow first mile for Blacksburg and the field, the Lady Bruins moved up throughout the race to end up having their top 7 runners taking the top 17 places including five runners earning All-State honors in Bonnie Angermeier (1st, 18:37), Emily Beatty (3rd, 18:48), Claire Ewing-Nelson (6th, 19:00), Jennifer Fleming (13th, 19:23), and Samantha Marin (14th, 19:27). Their team score of 35 points put them 43 points ahead of the state runners-up from Western Albemarle (78) and team average of 19:03 was the second fastest of the weekend at the state meet behind only 6A state champions Oakton (18:34). After cruising through their races at Great Meadow to win their program's VHSL all-time leading 14th state cross country team title in school history, Blacksburg now prepares for the Nike Cross Nationals Southeast Regional and a potential nationals berth as the second ranked team in the region.

After a slow first mile of the race was led by Rockbridge County senior Laurel Sheffield in 6:02 and Blacksburg tied with Hidden Valley at 68 points in the team standings, the race started to break up in the second mile with a half dozen runners found up front at the two mile mark in 12:18 led by Western Albemarle's Annie Taylor, Cave Spring's Katie Fortner, Loudoun Valley's Ciara Donohue, and Blacksburg's to three runners Angermeier, Beatty, and Ewing-Nelson. Third place in last year's Group AA state race, Angermeier seized the lead in the final half mile of the race to pull away for a 11 second victory in a time of 18:37.

Western Albemarle junior Taylor was able to hold off Angermeier's teammate Beatty for state runner-up honors with both runners timed at 18:48. One of the biggest surprises and best individual improvements among the top 15 All-State finishers was Western Albemarle freshmen Averi Witt running a big 24 second PR with a fourth place finish of 18:53. With two of the top four finishers in the race, the Western Albemarle girls were able to solidy their place on the podium as the state runners-up in a total team score of 78 points.

The Hidden Valley girls missed the podium (only two teams got on the podium for this year's new 6 classification ssytem races) in third place with 101 points. Their team was well packed with only a 27 second spread, but without a true front runner and no All-State individuals as a 16th place run from Carla Weidner (19:37) was the top finish for a Hidden Valley runner made it tough for them to break under 100 points.

3A Boys Race Summary: A fast and aggressive first mile is usually not a plan for success at Great Meadow in the state meet races, but usually a plan for an almost certain blow up. The Lafayette boys blew up that assumption as they rolled the dice and stunned the field having four runners among the top five places and 6 among the top 10 at the mile mark to be winning the meet by 60 points. The other state title team contenders Western Albemarle, Brentsville, and Blacksburg all tried to make up as much ground as they could in the final two miles of the races, but the Lafayette boys did not concede too much and finished strong enough to win their school's first state championship in cross country with a team score of 54 points and team average of 54 points.

Ranked fourth going into the meet after finishing second in the 3A East Regional to Brentsville and taking losses during invitational season to both Blacksburg and Hidden Valley, the Lafayette boys were arguably the only upset for a team title of the weekend. Lafayette had three runners earn All-State honors with Jason Menzies (3rd, 15:55), Andrew Loper (9th, 16:15), and Konrad Steck (11th, 16:19). Rounding out their top five scoring was Cade Moreno (24th, 16:35) and James Hart (25th, 16:40), while state champion 500 meter runner Derek Holdsworth (32nd, 16:47) added additional depth in the sixth runner spot. The Lafayette boys had been state runners-up twice in their school history back in 1999 and last year, but were finally able to get over the hump this weekend and snap Blacksburg's streak of four consecutive state titles.

The four-time defending state champions Blacksburg definitely struggled and had their worst team race of the season to fall all the way back to fourth place (101 points), which then made it down to Western Albemarle and Brentsville to battle for second place and awards podium appearance. The race appeared to be too close to call after the race and the official scores proved that with Western Albemarle (72 pts) edging out Brentsville (73 pts) by one point. Both teams had impressive top 5 spreads under 40 seconds. Western Albemarle was slightly stronger up front with All-State races from Gannon Willcutts (5th, 16:05) and Chris Ferguson (12th, 16:19), while Brentsville had a better back end onf their top five with #3-5 runners Jack McNally (22nd, 16:35), Jacob Willis (28th, 16:41), and Nicholas Broemmel (33rd, 16:48). Western Albemarle got PR races from Nathaniel Hashiaski (26th, 16:41), Trevor Stutzman (27th, 16:41), and Cy Webb (31st, 16:44) to help them to second place.

After all of Friday's boys races were won individually by a senior, the future of the sport in the state was showcased to start Saturday's meet with Loudoun Valley sophomore Andrew Hunter able to pull away from the Group 3A field in likely his first of many state titles in cross country and track with a 15:37 performance. Hunter started to break away from the Lafayette pack that surrounded him at the mile mark to open up a 10 second lead at the two mile mark with a 9:53 split. The gap between himself and second place ended up growing to 18 seconds at the finish line. Hunter competes next in the seeded race at Foot Locker South and expects to be one of the fastest underclassmen runners in the meet from all the South Region states.

It was a battle between two former Bay Rivers District runners for second place after Hunter between seniors Dawson Connell (2nd, 15:55) and Jason Menzies (3rd, 15:55) with the miler Connell able to have slightly better closing speed than Menzies to grab second as both ran their best races of the 2013 cross country season. 3A West Regional runner-up Gaige Kern of Alleghany ran his second sub 16 minute time in consecutive meets with a solid fourth place finish of 15:59.

2A Girls Race Summary: The Maggie Walker girls tied the 1993 Western Albemarle squad with the lowest winning team score at a VHSL State Championships with their dominant tally of 23 points in their new classification of 2A.  As overwhelming favorites to win, long-time coach Jim Holdren had to find other ways to motivate his team to run their best in the state championship race. In winning the Group 2A state title, the Maggie Walker girls gave Coach Holdren with over 50 years of coaching experience his second state team title in girls' cross country after winning his first over 30 years ago in 1982 with his Jefferson-Huguenot-George Wythe squad.

The long green line for the Maggie Walker girls started with sweeping the top three places individually. Maggie Walker senior Daisy Banta led the charge as after having to simply work hard to get out of the Central Region last year in the old Group AAA classification to compete in the state meet, has now become a state champion following her best season of races to date ending with a 18:49 win at Great Meadow. The future Group 2A state cross country champions look to also be on the Maggie Walker roster between freshmen Khloe Pointer (2nd, 18:59) and sophomore Emma Call (3rd, 19:07) able to finish ahead of the 2013 Group AA state indoor 3200 champ Carley Shannon (4th, 19:16) of Bruton and last year's Group A state runner-up Mary Easton (5th, 19:39) of Lebanon.

Maggie Walker just missed out on achieving a rarely seen feat in having all of their top 7 runners earn All-State individual honors with 7th runner Katie Pokorny (16th, 20:09) held off by East Rockingham sophomore Jordan Shuff (15th, 20:09) for the 15th and final All-State spot. Able to join Banta, Pointer, and Call as All-State finishers were teammates Celia Wilson (11th, 20:06), Lindsay Lickers (12th, 20:07), and Archana Shekharan (13th, 20:08). With Banta as the only senior among their top 7, the Maggie Walker girls look to keep rolling next fall and may be able to break their own shared lowest score meet record and get 7 girls inside the top 15 places.

The other teams in the field had to settle for competing for second place coming into the meet with George Mason, Floyd County, and Grayson County. Floyd County and Grayson County had traded wins with each other in several faceoffs this season, while George Mason would be racing both squads for the first time this season. Having a tight spreader than Floyd Conty (2:19) and Grayson County (2:19) turned out to be the deciding factor for George Mason girls (1:37) to  earn the state runner-up trophy with a team score of 90 points. Sophomore Blaise Sevier led the George Mason girls (8th, 19:52) as her team's lone All-State individual, while the rest of her team's top five found themselves in the 20's to 30's place range.

2A Boys Race Summary: The Maggie Walker boys actually outperformed their female counterparts in tallying an even lower team score in their Group 2A state title victory and win their boys program's second state championship in cross country and first since 2001. All 7 runners who toed the starting line for the Maggie Walker boys on Saturday at Great Meadow were also able to find themselves later on the podium as top 15 All-State individuals with Alex Fleckenstein (2nd, 15:38), Ryan Buscaglia (5th, 16:26), Evan Fisher (6th, 16:29), Austin Koch (7th, 16:41), Justin Wilck (10th, 16:48), and Nathaniel Tombes (11th, 16:48) to put together a complied score of merely 21 points.

Only team scorers Nathaniel Waddell (4th, 16:22) of James River, Seth Short (8th, 16:42) of Gretna, and Alex Kearney (9th, 16:43) of Robert E. Lee were able to break up the top 5 of Maggie Walker and keep them from achieving a perfect score of 15 points.

John S. Battle junior Brad Swiney kept Maggie Walker from having a complete sweep of both the team and individual titles in Group 2A. As expected, Swiney and Maggie Walker senior Alex Fleckenstein battled all the way to the end similar to their race earlier in the season at the MileStat.com Invite, which Swiney pulled ahead in the final 100 meters by two seconds. It happened again with Swiney and Fleckenstein running stride for stride in the first 4,900 meters after able to shake off James River's Waddell and Nelson County's James Ballowe (3rd, 16:05), who stuck with Swiney and Fleckenstein thru the mile in 5:03 and two mile in 10:15. On the final straightaway, Swiney was able to shift into another gear to win his second state title (3200 outdoors last spring) and first in cross country with a new 5K PR of 15:36. Fleckenstein also achieved a new 5K PR in second place at 15:38.

The George Mason boys moved up very well in the last mile to go from fourth place in the team standings at the two mile mark behind Strasburg and Floyd County to claim state runner-up honors, which is their second best state meet finish ever behind only their 2011 state champion squad. Only 5 separated them from third place Floyd County, who had one of the best packs in the entire state meet with a 24 second spread. George Mason was a little stronger up front, despite not having an All-State top 15 individual, but got top 20 races from Jackson Jost (17th, 17:07) and Truman Custer (18th, 17:08).

1A Girls Race Summary: It has been an interesting and challenging fall for the Radford cross country program after their local city government had forbidden them earlier in the season from training on the roads in their town. Despite the obstacles, distractions, and training adjustments created, the Radford girls were still able to win their first state cross country team title in school history for their girls' program. It was a runaway first state win for Radford girls as a team score of 54 points and team average of 21:06 placed them well ahead of runners-up Rappahannock County (91 pts).

Two young underclassmen girls in Mary Elliot (2nd, 19:55) and Cameron Schafer (3rd, 20:17) had stellar individual races to take the next two places in the race following an impressive solo victory for Rappahannock County sophomore Julia Wood. With no seniors among their top five as they got 25 finishes from freshmen Elliot Van Noy (16th, 21:39), junior Laura Puckett (19th, 21:47), and Carly Porter (23rd, 21:56) to complete their top five scoring, the Radford girls are in great position to repeat as champions next fall.

Wood led from the gun and continued to distance herself from the rest of the field as she led by 20 seconds at the mile mark in 5:54 and by 39 seconds at the two mile mark in 12:05 before ending with a 68 second margin of victory as she crossed the finish line tape in 18:47. Only 3 seconds off her season best time and her second state title after winning the 1600 meter title last spring in the old Group A. Wood will have a few more races against more competition in the post-season between Foot Locker South and USATF Junior Olympic races. Wood also helped elevate the Rappahannock County girls to their best state meet finish ever, who also had nearly two other girls among the top 20 in All-State finisher Emily Allen (8th, 20:52) and Emma Endre (21st, 21:50) to help their team cause.

Chilhowie (3rd, 96 pts) and Mathews (4th, 97 pts) were just behind Rappahannock County for second place. Mathews had the best time spread in the race at 1:27, while Chilhowie had a strong top three with All-State races from Ckareekeea Branch (10th, 21:09), Mikaela Schramm (13th, 21:20), and T.J. Howell (15th, 21:21).

1A Boys Race Summary: With today's technology, team scores and results are posted online well before the awards ceremony so teams and coaches know how they finish and kill the drama and suspense from the old way of waiting to find out at the awards ceremony. The last race of the day had timing issues to prevent the team score and winner in the 1A boys race being announced until the awards ceremony. After waiting 25 years to coach a state champion team, Galax coach Tony Quesenberry could have a few extra minutes to hear his team as the last ones called as the Group 1A state champions on Saturday.

The Galax boys came in ranked #1, but got all they could handle in a strong challenge from last year's Group A state champions Radford (2nd, 79 pts), but were able to hold on to celebrate their program's first state championship with a team score of 77 points and team average of 17:15. Galax was led by first year cross country runner Cliff Conley who helped his team tremendously by handing in a 1 point score card as the race champion in a time of 16:05 for the junior Conley. Conley was challenged through the first two miles of the race by Rural Retreat senior Matthew Farmer (2nd, 16:16) and Altavista senior Sean Farney (3rd, 16:23), while Middlesex's George Ellis IV (4th, 16:34) also stayed up with them for the first half of the race as well.

The Galax boys had a second All-State individual in Dustin Matthews (13th, 17:19), while the rest of their top 5 finished among the top 30 places in Chandler Quesenberry (17th, 17:26), Daniel Hix (22nd, 17:34), and Dominic DiGiacomo (30th, 17:53). The Radford boys also had 5 runners among the top 30 with All-State finishers Sam Van Noy (7th, 16:52) and Adam Johnston (12th, 17:13) as well as Cole Schafer (16th, 17:23), Tyler Agnes (25th, 17:41), and Mark Johnston (26th, 17:43).  There were four points displacers between Conley and Radford's first finisher, which turned out to be the difference between two evenly matched teams.
