VHSL Class 3 State Championship Recap


The Tabb boys and Heritage-Lynchburg girls used the power of the field events to capture the Class 3 championships last weekend at Liberty University in Lynchburg.

For Tabb, its combination of Zach Coldsnow and Elijah Bell gave the Tigers 40 of its 74 points. Coldsnow won both the shot-put (55-9.25) and discus (163-10) with personal record performances, while Bell easily won the high jump (6-9.5) and long jump (21-4.5).

On the girls' side, Heritage-Lynchburg benefitted from 41 points in the jumps, and its team total of 84 was 30 more than runner-up Christiansburg. In the long jump alone, Alaysia Oakes (18-6) of H-L won the event, while teammates Tya Blake (17-6.75) and Victoria Johnson (17-2.5) claimed second and third. Oakes and Blake were 2-3 in the triple jump, behind New Kent's Raven Harris (38-0).

Ryah Hinds of York was the day's lone three-time champion, repeating her performance of last year with wins in the 100 (12.53), 200 (25.03) and 400 (55.40). The Falcon girls ended up tied with James Monroe for sixth with 44 points. Monroe also saw wins from Ginny Beringer in the 800 (2:16.57), and 4x400, with the foursome of Beringer, Maddie Tierney, Carrie Stinchcomb, and Yasmin Deane (4:01.44).

Western Albemarle finished second in the boys' division with 69.5. They were jumpstarted early Saturday morning by a 1-2-3-5-7 finish in the 3200 for a 30-point boost. Joe Hawkes won the event in 9:28.81, followed by Jack Eliason (9:31.74), and Will Bonner (9:45.69). Hawkes and Eliason finished 2-3 in the 1600 two hours later to complete the 44-point surge which gave the Warriors the lead for most of the day. However, Tabb's Jalen Jackson and D'Amir Kimble's 3-6 finish in the 200 finals gave the Tigers the lead for the first time. Tabb added a single point in the day's last event, the 4x400, while Western Albemarle failed to score.

Ethan Mills of Christiansburg was a double winner on Saturday, with titles in the 1600 (4:17.27) and 800 (1:53.38).

Tru Crenshaw of Booker T. Washington won the boys' 100 (11.16) and 200 (22.21), and New Kent's C.J. Reeders claimed the triple jump championship with a hop, skip and jump of 48 feet even.

For the Class 3 girls, I.C. Norcom's Jasmine Gilliam owned the hurdles, winning both the 100 (15.21) and 300 (45.81). Northside's Tracey Hueston matched Coldsnow's feat for the girls, capturing the shot-put (40-5.5) and discus (124-10) competitions with personal record throws.
