Since 1997 when First Colonial's Brian Kollar set the Virginia high school outdoor state record in the discus with a mark of 196 feet and 5 inches, there has never been any serious threats of Kollar's record being in jeopardy as only a handful of throwers have went over 180 feet in the past 14 years and none over 190 feet. Finally someone has come along to make a serious run for the state discus record after Woodbridge senior Isaiah Simmons launched a bomb of 192 feet and 7 inches at the Gojekian Twilight Classic on Friday night. A state record breaker and national runner-up indoors this past winter in the shot put, Simmons has developed nicely over the last two years in the discus as shown with his recent US #4 monster throw.

Other top performances from the Friday invitational at Woodbridge included Colonial Forge's David Klimek posting a state leading time of 1:55.8 in the 800, Forest Park freshmen Musahakim Williams clocking only the 3rd sub 22 second 200 in Virginia this spring at 21.98, and Anthony Williams of Potomac improving upon his #1 time in Virginia in the 110 hurdles by a hundredth of a second at 14.43 while winning a close race with teammate Devin Brewer in the 300 hurdles.

After being snubbed by the Penn Relays this past week from being selected to the compete in the 3000 meter run, Lake Braddock sophomore Sophie Chase showed them that they made a big mistake in running a big PR and state leading time of 10:33.44 in the 3200 meter run last night at the Lake Braddock Hall of Fame Invitational. Also competing in the Friday portion of the meet, state cross country champion and indoor 1000 state champ Ahmed Bile of Annandale made his season debut with a 1:56.01 victory in the 800 meter run. Winning the girls' race in the 800 was returning AAA state outdoor champ in the event, Myah Hicks of Thomas Edison, with a final time of 2:17.35.

More to come from this weekend's meets as results have come in. Potential severe storms on Saturday have pressured several meets to make early calls on postponements and cancellations, while a handful of others have pressed on to hopefully skirt around or be temporarily delayed by bad weather.

Gojekian Twilight Classic: Simmons 192-7 discus - Battlefield girls rule relays

Photo by Anthony Banks   Friday evening saw the return of the Gojekian Twilight Classic after a six year absence when the meet was formerly known as the Gojekian Relays was held at Woodbridge High School in 2005. Woodbridge's own Isaiah Simmons gave the meet a roaring return with one of the best discus marks all-time in Virginia high school history at 192'7". The Battlefield girls ruled the relay events as shown with the Lady Bobcats taking first in four of the five relay races including a sub 4 minute 4x400 meter relay. Forest Park boys ran a state leading 42.54 4x100 meter relay with much of their relay's success owed to the emerging of a rising star in freshmen Musahakim Williams, who clocked the fastest times individually in the 100 and 200. Read more...

Indoor Track is Back! Well...Weather Induced at Gus Lacy Track Classic

After running laps and laps around the shorter track indoor facilities throughout the winter, many of the teams and athletes competing at this past Saturday's Gus Lacy Track Classic were given an unexpected return back to indoor racing with meet management opting to move the meet into the Fork Union's Estes Athletic Center due to the severe storms which rolled through Virginia. Some adjustments had to be made to the events offered since some of events such as the 4x100, 100/110 hurdles, and 300 hurdles cannot be run on a 160 meter indoor track facility. With athletes more fit and faster in the spring, the Estes Center produced some great performances than normally seen during the winter. Western Albemarle senior Derek Armstrong punctuated this in running one of the fastest 3200 meter time ever at the facility with a 9:19.56. In the last ten years, only Kippy Keino of Fork Union at 9:20 had run as fast in the Estes Center.   Gus Lacy Track Classic Complete Results

Lee-Davis Invite: Moye 4:58/10:50 in outdoor debut, Snyder outduels Crawford in fast 800

After a busy first season of indoor track which included state individual titles in the 1600 and 3200 along with an All-American performance in the two mile, Megan Moye returned to racing action this spring at the Lee-Davis Invitational on Saturday. The Cosby junior Moye (pictured above by Stephen Slone) easily automatically qualified for state competition in the 1600 and 3200 meter run with a state leading time of 4:58.76 in the 1600 meter run after running a solid sub 11 minute time earlier in the meeto win the 3200 by 24 seconds. The boys' 800 meter run saw a match-up between two of the Central Region and state's best in the event between Cody Snyder of Lee-Davis and Keith Crawford of Huguenot. Crawford took the lead from Snyder, but Snyder responded with a strong close for a Virginia #1 time of 1:54.86, which is an open 800 PR for Snyder after running several 4x800 leg splits in the past with times similar or faster.     Lee-Davis Invitational Complete Results   Lee-Davis Invitational Photo Gallery by Stephen Slone
