Week #2 of MileStat.com's preseason XC practice tour takes us down to Virginia Beach to visit the Ocean Lakes team for a fartlek workout at Seashore Park. The Ocean Lakes cross country squad has been one of the most successful programs in the Eastern Region over the last decade and beyond under the guidance of Coach Mike Nestor. The Ocean Lakes program starts a new chapter with no Eastern Region anymore and in the 6A South Region, which includes adds in some of the former Central Region and Northwest Region schools to make their regional meet before the state meet more of a challenge and competitive. 

Tallwood junior Steven Dunbar now has a share of the national leaderboard in the boys high jump after clearing a personal best height of 6 feet 9 inches at the CNU High School Showcase on Friday in Newport News, Virginia.

One of the best track rivalries to look forward to in the 2012-2013 indoor track season is between Eastern Region hurdlers Chantel Ray of Hampton and Leah Lott of Landstown. Both are ranked #14 all-time in Virginia high school history with their 7.99 personal bests in the 55 meter hurdles,

  Eastern Region virtual meet pre-season preview for the upcoming 2012-2013 indoor track & field season. Virtual meet pre-season preview includes the top 8 returning individual performers from the 2011-2012 indoor season performances (relays are not included). The state's finest region for track & field should stay that way for 2013 with a hoard of talented individuals coming back led by US indoor high school junior class 400 meter record holder Michael Cherry of Oscar Smith.

At the 2012 Eastern Region Meet, 1-2 individual finishes were enjoyed by the Ocean Lakes girls with Nicole Park and Olivia Bethune as well as the Kellam boys with Billy Boros and David Gregory. The Hickory boys kept Ocean Lakes from sweeping the team titles for a third year in a row in the final Eastern Region Cross Country Championships.

The final Eastern Region Cross Country Championships will be held Thursday, November 1st at Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake. It has been tough for any Eastern Region team over recent years to beat any cross country squad produced by coach Mike Nestor at Ocean Lakes. The Ocean Lakes cross country program will attempt to make it a sweep of the team titles for the third consecutive year.

The first annual CNU High School Chase & Relay Chase was held Saturday, September 1st at Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake. Schools were given the option to place their runners in two different types of races between a 1.7 mile co-ed "chase" race with staggered start times or a two-person 1.5 mile relay race.

More than any other classification in Virginia, the Group AAA girls will be a fairly wide open battle for the state team title with nearly a handful of teams with a legitimate shot. Five teams in particular with Oakton, Colonial Forge, Lake Braddock, Midlothian, and Ocean Lakes all have their eyes on the prize of being the last team called up on the podium at Great Meadow in November.

  MileStat.com will be staggering out a pre-season cross country top 25 returning individual runners list for the upcoming 2012 season in groups of 5 athletes over the next few weeks. Take a look at #16 through #20 on the girls' individual side which includes one of the clutchest performers in the last cross country season, an all-time 1000 meter performer, a rising junior who had three All-State honors this past year without an outdoor season, and a hot and cold runner when on is a top 5 state cross meet finisher, and a defending regional champion who might be an underdog to repeat this season.

The 2011 All-MileStat.com Cross Country Team has been published. Selections include Runner of the Year, Coach of the Year, Freshmen of the Year, Most Improved Runner of the Year, and 7 runners selected each for the first, second, and third All-MileStat.com teams. Greatest weight given to championship season (district, regional, and state) as well as post-season (Foot Locker/NXN) performances in the selection process, but consistently strong performers during the invitational season was taken into consideration as well if a subpar race or two down the final stretch.
