  MileStat.com has compiled a list of the top 50 fastest performers from the state of Virginia in the 34 year history of the Foot Locker South Regional Qualifier held always at McAlpine Greenway Park in the Charlotte, North Carolina.

 MileStat.com will be on-site with coverage of the Foot Locker Nationals in not so sunny San Diego (rain forecasted for Friday into Saturday) with Brandon Miles and photographer John Herzog. This week will have the largest number of finalists from Virginia at the Foot Locker Nationals in a decade as the 1997 FLN had four girls and two boys from Virginia. At least one in the group including Jason Witt of Midlothian, Griff Graves of Abingdon, Thomas Porter of Mountain View, and Michael Hammond of Midlothian will be looking to break a four year drought of no Virginian boys earning All-American honors with a top 15 finish at Foot Locker Nationals (Kippy Keino, Fork Union, 2002, 15th). While two boys in Griff Graves and Thomas Porter will have experience from last year as returning finalists, Aurora Scott will be making her fourth trip to San Diego as she looks to continue her progression of improved places in each of her races at Balboa Park. A national runner-up last year, Scott is not in the favorite role as she found herself in last year after a course record breaking performance at the regional meet in 2006. Winning is a goal for Scott, but a victory would be an upset to others. Kathleen Lautzenheiser is part of the trio of Midlothian finalists who will be in San Diego as they were all guided by long-time Midlo coach Stan Morgan. Coach Morgan has coached for decades until having his first individual qualify for Foot Locker Nationals this year and ended up having not just one, but three finish in the top 10 at the South Regional.We arrive in San Diego on Thursday and will be bringing you plenty of coverage through Sunday with photos, videos, interviews, stories, and more. The Virginia girls will look to improve upon only sending one representative last year to San Diego with Foot Locker South champion and Foot Locker National runner-up Aurora Scott, but that is not even a guarantee with the great female runners within the South region as well as the uncertainty of what kind of shape the returning Foot Locker South champion is in. With six returning Foot Locker National finalists as well as some national caliber runners back who failed to make it in the top 10 last year with the likes of Nike Indoor Nationals 2 mile champion Ashley Brasovan from Florida and 4:47 1600 meter best Emily Reese from Georgia. and 4:47 1600 meter best Emily Reese from Georgia, the seeded race will be ultra competitive. The two best bets outside of Scott to finish in the top ten will be the top two finishers from the AAA state race two weeks ago in Kathleen Lautzenheiser (pictured left by John Herzog) of Midlothian and Lia DiValentin of Chantilly.

Peter Dorrell recently was ranked among the top 10 best runners in the country by MileSplit US national editor Scott Bush in his Footlocker Power Rankings. The Blacksburg senior was the only newcomer in the top 10 as his victory at the Maymont Festival over an outstanding field of individuals two weeks ago helped earn him the high national ranking. Meanwhile, returning Foot Locker National runner-up Aurora Scott remains in the top 10 in the #8 position after another week idle from racing.MileSplit's Foot Locker Power Rankings Meanwhile, the Midlothian girls will enter Saturday's Manhattan Invitational as the #3 ranked team in the United States and will have a shot at taking the #1 spot if they can defeat defending Nike Team Nationals champions and current US #1 Fayetteville-Manlius of New York as well as the rest of the Eastern State Championships field at Van Courtland Park.MileSplit's National Team Power Rankings

 Among the 24 runners featured in MileSplit US national editor Scott Bush's Foot Locker South Region Power Rankings, one-third of the listed runners come from the Commonwealth with five Virginian boys and three Virginian girls. Griff Graves of Abingdon leads the boys with a #4 ranking as he is followed by #5 Jason Witt of Midlothian, #6 Peter Dorrell of Blacksburg, and #8 Thomas Porter of Mountain View. Making his first splash into the rankings as a Foot Locker contender is Potomac School's Johns Ross at #12. Another private school runner has made an impression with her recent performances to earn a #9 ranking among the South Region girls with Trinity junior Barbara Strehler, a 35 second winner at Woodberry Forest over a returning All-South performer in Liz Barclay of Albemarle. Two other Virginians ranked with Strehler are defending FL South champion Aurora Scott at #2 and Chantilly junior Lia DiValentin rounding out the top 12 rankings. MileSplit's Foot Locker Power Rankings - South Region

  The Western Albemarle and Louisa County cross country teams made the trip together down to Cary, North Carolina this past weekend for the adidas Wolfpack Invitational. The Western Albemarle boys, recently ranked #3 in the latest Southeast region rankings, did not have the showing they hoped for with a third place finish behind two unranked North Carolina squads Broughton (1st, 64 pts) and Enloe (2nd, 77 pts). Despite having two of the top four finishers with Tyler Stutzman (3rd, 16:07) and Kyle Satterwhite (4th, 16:09), the two North Carolina teams were able to pull ahead of the Warriors (3rd, 79 pts) in the remaining top five positions as Broughton gained a 10 point advantage alone in the fifth man position. Louisa County had a solid showing in fifth place behind last year's NTN squad Chapel Hill (4th, 134 pts) with two top 8 finishers in Thomas Baker (6th, 16:31) and Lawrence Minor (8th, 16:42).   L.C. Bird also represented the Commonwealth well with a sixth place finish in the invitaitonal division as they were paced by race runner-up Justin Kendall in a time of 17:09. Hannah Best's third place run of 20:27 led the Louisa girls to a fourth place showing in the invitational division, while the Western Albemarle girls finished sixth in the championship race.  Aurora Scott also competed at the Wolfpack Invite as she won the championship division race easily with a 18:27 5K at SAS Park. Scott had competed two years ago at the same venue for the Great American Festival as she raced unattached in the college race in 2005 with a time of 17:35. 

 Virginia star harriers, Aurora Scott and Griff Graves, kicked off their season with impressive wins.  Scott decimated collegiate competition, while Graves improved his opening weekend time from last year by 15 seconds.

Photo by John Herzog Defending Foot Locker South champion and returning Foot Locker Nationals runner-up Aurora Scott started off her fall cross country season on the road back to San Diego and a national title run at Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlin Invitational on Saturday in Virginia Beach. Scott bested the collegiate runners by nearly a full minute with her winning time of 18:16. In past years, Scott has ran some of her early season races unattached against collegiate competition as she did in 2005 at Great American and the Norfolk State Invitational then in 2006 at UVA's Lou Onesty Invitational.

Last year's Foot Locker South champion and course record breaker, who went onto the second highest finish ever by a Virginian at Foot Locker Nationals behind two-time champion Erin Keogh with a national runner-up showing in San Diego, went MIA for the second year in a row during the track season after a brilliant cross country season. However, unlike the previous year, Scott did show her face during indoors with a US #1 3200 time in January at Liberty and then a 5K national title indoors at Nike Indoor Nationals before vanishing in the spring. When and where she will appear in races this cross country is anyone's guess, but when she does, she will be ready and prepared for her fourth straight trip to Foot Locker Nationals and go after that national championship she has been working in progression to since her freshmen year. 26th at Footlocker Nationals as a freshmen in 2004. 9th at Foot Locker Nationals as a sophomore in 2005. 2nd at Foot Locker Nationals as a junior in 2006. 1st at Foot Locker Nationals as a senior in 2007? Few national caliber female runners have such a consistent progression as Aurora Scott has shown in the "Super Bowl" of high school cross country at Foot Locker Nationals. The path certainly has been paved for Virginia's pre-season #1 ranked female harrier.

James River senior Kristen Wolfe (pictured left by John Herzog) leads one of deepest and most talented pool of Central Region individuals and teams as the defending regional champion. Only the likes of Footlocker Nationals runner-up Aurora Scott, 15-time AA state champion Catherine White, and eventual 10:31 2 miler Sarrah Hadiji joined Wolfe under 18 minutes for 5K last fall as Wolfe has the fastest returning time in AAA at 17:58. 12 of the top 20 returning 5K times among AAA girls happen to be from the Central Region. Meanwhile, the Midlothian girls will be heavily favored to win their third consecutive state title, while Douglas Freeman and Maggie Walker return talented squads that can make podium runs and give the Central Region a possible rare accomplishment in a sweep of the top three positions.
