The Region III cross country championships at Wolf Branch Farm in Forest were dominated by two different themes Thursday. The first was change, while the second was overcoming challenges. The biggest change was the realignment of the region with the Southern Valley and Massanutten districts joining the region replacing the River Ridge, leaving all sorts of possibilities for athletes to claim the top spot on the podium. Amid this reorganizing and shifting, Laura Rapp of Heritage remained consistent, winning the girls' race in 19 minutes, 5 seconds.Read full story... Brian Phillips always knew Margaret Richards (pictured right by Scott Rigler) would be a perfect fit for cross country. The Broadway High School senior was good enough in outdoor track, qualifying for the Group AA meet in both the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters as a sophomore, but she was one of those runners that just seemed to be built for longer races. She didn’t have the blow-you-away kick that true 800-meter runners have, but she was the type that seemed to be able to keep the same pace forever. All Phillips, the BHS cross country coach, needed to do was get her away from the marching band. “I pretty much had to keep bugging her and bugging her and bugging her,” Phillips said. In her senior year, he was finally successful, and – after quitting the band – Richards proved him right, winning the Massanutten District girls’ cross country individual title.Read full story...

Alex Ott did not move or change schools, but his school at Turner Ashby moved into a new district to allow him to add a Massanutten District cross country title to his now defunct Valley District individual title from last year. The Turner Ashby junior was challenged by Harrisonburg's Bryant Clopper, but able to pull away for the win in a battle between two All-State Group AA caliber runners. Clopper had beaten Ott at the Runnin' With The Wolves Rocktoberfest two Saturdays ago just as the Harrisonburg and Turner Ashby boys had beaten the Spotswood boys in the same race. Despite being the third finishing team in the district in their last invitational race, the Spotswood boys (pictured right by Tom Hoerner) used the power of their tight pack to claim the district championship on Tuesday afternoon at New Market Battlefield. Girls team champions from Massanutten were Broadway's Margaret Richards and the Turner Ashby girls. As a senior, Richards was competing in her first district cross country championships although has had past success on the track including a 11:35 3200 meter time as a freshmen. With the Blacksburg team being cleared last second to attend the Manhattan Invitational in New York, the clarity of the favorites for the Runnin With The Wolves Rocktoberfest has been dramatically changed with the door opened to new teams and individuals with one of the state's top girls teams in Blacksburg and top boys individuals in Peter Dorrell headed to NYC. Without them, the show will still go on as Jefferson Forest coach Jerome Loy will be putting on a great meet with a wild start and plenty of tunes to keep the runners pumped through the entirety of the challenging 5K course.Pictured right by John Herzog: Turner Ashby's Alex Ott finished just a second ahead of fellow Group AA runner Tim Smith of Cave Spring at Maymont two weeks ago. The two return in action against one another on Saturday at the Runnin' With The Wolves Rocktoberfest and could press each other to go under Mike Spooner's 16:25 course record at Wolf Branch Farm.

Both course records went down in tonight's Brentsville Relays with some scorching individual splits and total team times as the cooler conditions must have been welcomed by the runners as shown by their race performances. The Eleanor Roosevelt girls (1st, 4:42) from Maryland showed they are still a force to be reckoned with in the Southeast region and nationally despite graduation losses, as they were a minute and a half faster than their 2006 course record win (46:13) at Brentsville to defeat a virtually identical Midlothian squad (2nd, 44:44) from last by a few seconds. Midlothian anchor Kathleen Lautzenheiser was able to make up quite a considerable deficit on Eleanor Roosevelt's Dominique Lockart for the fastest split ever at Brentsville Relays in 8:43, but not enough to pull Midlo ahead as the two outstanding programs gapped the field by quite a margin. Third place "A" race finishers from Lake Braddock won the combined team title as their depth was showcaed with the performances of their "B" and "C" teams earlier in the evening. After the preseason Southeast region and Virginia #1 ranked Midlothian boys were dealt a humbling fourth place finish in their season opener at Great Meadow and great adversity with a major transfer loss as well as a few injuries, they rebounded nicely at Brentsville Relays thanks to a 7:27 anchor leg from Jason Witt (pictured above) to come from behind on one of the teams which beat them last week in Mountain View with a 38:56 course record win. Mountain View (2nd, 39:15) had built an early lead after a great 7:26 second leg by Foot Locker finalist Thomas Porter. However, neither 2007 Foot Locker hopefuls Porter or Witt were distinguished with honors of the fastest split of the night as Turner Ashby junior Alex Ott opened up in a intense first leg battle with a 7:25 split. Mountain View showed why they still should be considered a better team than Midlothian until the Trojans can beat the Wildcats in a 5K race as their winning "B" and "C" teams earlier gave Coach Dave Davis' squad the overall title and second trophy to bring home.BRENTSVILLE RELAYS RESULTS - COACHES EMAIL YOUR SPLITS (ALL LEGS) TO MILESTAT@GMAIL.COMBrentsville Relays Photo Gallery by Ted Plunkett - 648 photos total. Great finish in start of XC at Chancellor! Photo by Brandon Miles A great opener to the cross country season was held at Fredericksburg's Loriella Park for the Chancellor Invitational. The meet had two nationally ranked boys programs Jamestown and Mountain View clash in an early season test for both squads to see where they are at in beginning of this fall. The Chancellor Invite also saw a meet and course record go down by a somewhat surprise winner in Northwest Region outdoor 3200 meter champion Elizabeth Walls just dipping under the old Loriella best of 19:46 set by Kristyn Shiring of North Stafford with her winning time of 19:45 on a mild Saturday in September. While Walls pulled away for a decisive victory over a quality field in the last half of the race, Alex Ott and Andrew Colley could not shake each other off until the end in the varsity boys race with Ott pulling out the slight edge in a great finish. In a kicking battle to the line between two of AA's best juniors, Ott took the win in 16;30.8, while Colley settled as a close runner-up in 16:31.2. Colley did take home first place hardware though as his Jamestown team (54) defeated a Thomas Porter-less Mountain View squad (67 pts) by 13 points. The Eagles were able to overcome Mountain View putting five ahead of their fourth with three runners ahead of Mountain View's top finisher Daniel Porter (9th, 17:25.4). The Mountain View coaches wanted to see how well the rest of their guys could run without their ace Thomas Porter and their boys held up well as Mountain View at full strength against Jamestown on this day would have likely picked up a close win. While girls field lacked the powerhouse squads like Jamestown and Mountain View on the boys, one team stepped as a team to look out for thanks to the emergence of a talented freshmen. Sullivan Parkes had been a pre-race favorite coming in as a pre=season #13 ranked runner in the state, but she was not even the top finisher on her squad or household despite a solid fourth place time of 20:24 as her freshmen sister Presley Parkes ran a stellar high school debut race as runner-up in 19:58. With the firepower up front from the Parkes sisters, Millbrook won by a fair margin of 20 points over host school and AA #7 ranked Chancellor (2nd, 101 pts) with a team score of 81 points. Millbrook also defeated additional AA ranked squads in AA #5 James Wood (5th, 206 pts) and AA #6 Heritage-Leesburg (7th, 230 pts). Photo by Brandon Miles A total of 34 schools and 1157 athletes will be competing at Saturday's Chancellor Invitational, which will be an season opener for all teams involved. MileStat.com will be on-site with coverage bringing you video, photos, and interviews from Loriella Park in Fredericksburg. First race begins at 9:30 AM with the varsity boys as the varsity girls, developmental boys, and developmental girls will follow thereafter. The meet will be an early clash between two Nike Team Nationals ranked squads in SE #4 Mountain View and SE #8 Jamestown, who will be led by two of the top individual harriers in the race with VA #4 ranked Thomas Porter (Mountain View) and VA #13 ranked Andrew Colley (Jamestown). Throwing in Turner Ashby junior and VA #6 ranked Alex Ott, the course record of 16:02 set by Devin Cornwall in 2005 could come under attack. Millbrook junior Sullivan Parkes finished 11th at the 2006 Chancellor Invite, but comes into this season as the #13 ranked runner in the state of Virginia and as a pre-race favorite for Saturday. However, defending Chancellor Invite champion Kaylan Comer (pictured above) might have something to say about that as a three-time All-State cross country performer in cross country.

MileSplit US national editor Scott Bush thinks very highly of Virginia's best cross country runners and rightfully so with two Foot Locker finalists returning in Griff Graves and Thomas Porter, a Nike Indoor Nationals 5K champion in Jason Witt, and a Group AA outdoor state triple champion in Peter Dorrell as all four were ranked by Bush in his pre-season Foot Locker Power Rankings in the South region. Virginia has twice as many runners ranked in the top ten than the next best states in North Carolina and Texas, who both have two individuals ranked among the first ten. In 2006, Virginia had three qualifiers for Foot Locker Nationals, which was the most for the state since 2001. The last time Virginia had more than three qualifiers was in 1995 when only eight made out of Charlotte onto nationals as the state had a dominant showing with five of the eight finalists. The potential for four finalists this year is very realistic. Alex Ott, Joe Lorusso, and Brian Landry also received mention. MileSplit's Foot Locker Power Rankings - South Boys

The All-MileStat.com Boys Cross Country Team has been selected for the 2006 season. Awards were given out to runner of the year, coach of the year, freshmen of the year, most improved runner of the year, and comeback story of the year. Also being named were first, second, and third teams consisting of seven members for each team. Performances throughout the season were looked at with championship and post-season races being given stronger, but not ultimate consideration. The very unpredictable and inconsistent nature of the sport on a week to week basis makes any selections tough to break down into a science, but our hope is the main goal of trying to give as much as recognition as possible to individuals in the sport is noted and appreciated.
