The Jamestown boys’ cross country team won the Bay Rivers District Championship in impressive fashion, placing five runners in the top 15 places. The Region 1 Championship was eerily similar, as six of Jamestown’s runners placed in the top 10. Most of the attention was placed on front-runner Andrew Colley, who broke the course records at both meets, running 14:36 and 15:45 respectively. Right behind Colley, however, were his teammates Junior Colin Mearns and Senior John Holt.
Mearns and Holt finished second and third respectively at both the district and regional meets, securing the Jamestown victories. The pair forms the backbone of the Jamestown squad. Their top 10 individiaul finishes at both Maymont and Manhattan were the keys to the Eagles establishing themselves as a team worthy of national rankings and recognition from their performances at both meets.

The 50th annual William & Mary Invitational will be contested this weekend at Eastern State Hospital. The longest running high school cross country invitational might not be as large and competitive in past years with meets such as Oatlands and Maymont growing to fields of 100 plus schools, but the meet still has a large gathering and will feature some of the state's better runners and teams including matchups of VA #1 Jamestown and VA #9 Western Branch as well as VA #4 Andrew Colley and VA #8 Bobby Peavey. There is a pretty solid group of 8 runners who are forming as the state's top tier of boys cross country runners this fall in Tyler Stutzman, Thomas Porter, Ben Dejarnette, Andrew Colley, Alex Ott, Kyle Satterwhite, Josh Morris, and Bobby Peavey. Who is this week's #1? It is tough to call with none of the mentioned runners having raced head to head yet. The Oatlands Invitational this weekend will change that with Stutzman, Porter, Dejarnette, Ott, and Satterwhite racing in a field which will also include of the nation's top returning runners in Solomon Haile (Sherwood HS of MD), the Nike Indoor and Outdoor Nationals 5K champ last year.
Megan Marsico's recent string of jaw dropping performances could not be overlooked and helped move her up to the #2 spot in Virginia and knocking on the door of defending Group AA state champ Kathleen Lautzenheiser (pictured left by Ted Plunkett), who rolled on her anchor leg at Brentsville to lead Midlothian to victory. Marsico destroyed the field at Knights Crossing in a meet record time of 18:01 as she bested the old record held by three-time AAA state champ and Foot Locker finalist Catherine White.
Complete individual rankings for each classification and each region in Group AAA and Group AA to be posted later this evening...

The Jamestown boys did not face much competition at Saturday's Lee-Davis Invitational, but their team performance on a warm day at Pole Green Park would have been tough for any team in Virginia to seriously challenge. The #2 ranked team in Virginia had four of the top 5 finishers and nearly all under 17 minutes. Their top runner Andrew Colley (pictured right by Tom Hoerner), one of the favorites for the Group AA state titles, had a stellar race in his first meet back since suffering a season ending injury in the outdoor track season as he crushed the field with a 15:52 5K victory.

Meet Summary · Oct 24, 2007
The Jamestown boys can almost treat the Bay Rivers District Meet as a time trial with likely only a few individuals in the district able to break up their top five. The Jamestown girls have an excellent shot at joining the boys as district champions, but it will be more of a fight for the title with New Kent and Tabb looking to keep it very close. Jamestown coach Howard Townsend also has two of the district individual favorites leading both of his respective squads with juniors Andrew Colley and Rachel Apostles.

More than 80 schools will be represented at Saturday's William & Mary Invitational as many outstanding cross country runners and teams from Virginia, Maryland, DC, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and North Carolina will be spread out among the three varsity race divisions. Leading the individuals will be newly minted stars with Foot Locker South rankings in Virginia private school runners Johns Ross (pictured above by Linda D'Amato) of The Potomac School and Barbara Strehler of Trinity. The Jamestown boys will be the overwhelming team favorites with none of their fellow NTN regionally ranked Virginia squads present to take on the NTN Southeast #3 ranked Eagles on their home course at Eastern State Hospital. Meanwhile, Eastern Region title contenders in the Western Branch and Ocean Lakes girls look to clash for the first time this season with several Northern Virginia teams looking to make things interesting.

Podcast interview with Jamestown cross country coach Howard Townsend. Coach Townsend's Jamestown boys are a strong contender for the Group AA state title this fall as the Eagles return six of their top seven runners. Jamestown is a a very youthful team as there is not a single senior among their top five returning runners and find themselves as Nike Team Nationals preseason #8 ranked squad in the Southeast region.

MileStat.com's Brandon Miles analyzes the top five teams in the state to look out for this cross country season as part of a series of preview articles leading into this fall. Midlothian is the front runner again after holding strong last fall as a pre-season #1 to the finish and onto a dominating AAA state title and Virginia's first NTN appearance. The Trojans will have the handle the pressure of the bull's eye on them once again in 2007. The Western Albemarle boys have a team that has the talent to match up with Midlo's front three with the trio under 16 minutes in the Footlocker South sophomore race back. Oakton has the power in depth and numbers as last fall with six runners back under 10 minutes in the 3200. Jamestown is the sleeper with a very youthful squad as all of their top five runners will be back in 2008 as well. Mountain View is only three years old, but the road to the state meet podium looks to be paved ahead of schedule.

Chancellor Invitational to be held at Loriella Park in Fredricksburg. The opening meet will feature over 1,100 athletes representing a total of 32 schools. The Colonial Forge girls are the top ranked team in the field with their #8 state preseason ranking. Individually, Mountain View sophomore Thomas Porter is head of his class this weekend at Loriella as he will attempt to go after Devin Cornwall\'s one year old course record of 16:02, while a slew of girls are in the running to cross the line first at Loriella. AS OF 4:34 PM FRIDAY...CHANCELLOR INVITE IS STILL ON!
Meet Summary · Sep 03, 2005
Culpeper senior Devin Cornwall kicked off his season in a big way as he
broke the 10 year old Loriella Park 5K course record as he won the Chancellor Invitational in a
time of 16:02.70. Cornwall demolished the old record by 20 seconds as he posted the fastest time on
a course that is considered by some more than 30 seconds slower than the Great Meadows state
course. While Cornwall finished 16th in last fall\'s Group AAA cross country state race, busting out
such a tremendous performance at Loriella has to make him a sudden early favorite for the state
crown along with other top state meet returnees such as Patterson Wilhelm (E.C. Glass), Brad
Siragusa (Chantilly), and Mike Spooner (West Springfield).
