Three Virginia girls posted state leading performances on day one including two US #1 performances from Ocean Lakes senior Audrey Batzel in the 3200 meter run (10:39.96) and Louisa County junior Javanique Burrus in the long jump (20'1"). Batzel has put together a string of outstanding races over the last month including a 4:58 mile and 2:55 1000. Burrus had only been over 19 feet once, while being a consistent performer ov er 18 feet prior to her big mark at St. Chris. The third state leading performance came from Matoaca sophomore Briana Hayes, who bettered her VA #1 season best by clearing at US #7 height of 5'7" in the high jump. An outstanding boys' long jump competition with three over 23 feet led by winner Jamarian Bates of Matoaca at a US #7 leap of 23'8.75". St. Christopher's stellar indoor track facility for whatever reason has not produced the always fastest times in the 55 dash or hurdles, but Phoebus freshmen Carolyn Brown dispelled that assumption with a facility record breaking 7.04 clocking in the 55 meter dash.   Meet Page & Coverage  Complete Results Photo Gallery by Ryan Kelly - 6,331 photos total

  Photos by Kyle Brazeil of MileSplit New York     Announced after the New Balance Games on Saturday, January 21st, three girls from Virginia earned their way into the Millrose Games high school mile field with either top two finishes at select Armory races this season or on time. This year's Millrose Games will be held Saturday, February 11th in a new location (previously at the Madison Square Garden) at the New York Armory. Earlier this season, Ocean Lakes senior Audrey Batzel earned her spot with a fourth place finish of 4:58.07 at the Hispanic Games on January 8th. Meanwhile, Foot Locker finalists Megan Moye of Cosby and Sophie Chase of Lake Braddock visited New York City last weekend for the final qualifier race for Millrose. Moye nearly was able to run away from the field for a the win before Laura Leff of West Genesse (NY) was able to catch her down the final stretch for a 4:48.96 win. Despite not getting the win, her second place effort was the second fastest indoor mile time ever by a Virginia high school prep behind only Sarah Bowman (4:46.79) of Fauquier. Her mile time of 4:49.36 from the New Balance Games converts to 4:47.68 for 1600 meters. Taking third in the race behind Moye was her rival Sophie Chase, who had beaten Moye in all four of their head-to-head races in cross country season. The Lake Braddock junior qualified by time for Millrose with her VA #12 all-time indoor performance of 4:55.79 last weekend at the Armory. One-fourth of the 12 runner high school girls' mile field for Millrose will be from the state of Virginia with Batzel, Chase, and Moye accepting their race invitations.

    Virtual meet rankings (top 8 in each event & team scores) for Group AAA according to performances in the database of January 17th. While both Foot Locker finalists Sophie Chase and Megan Moye will be heading up to the Armory in New York City this weekend to run the mile at the New Balance Games, Ocean Lakes senior Audrey Batzel was up there two weeks ago for the Hispanic Games and ran the state's leading time for 1600 meters with her converted time of 4:56.34. Batzel, who ran a 2:18 open 800 over the winter break at Boo Williams, will be shooting for a fast time in the 1000 meter run this weekend at the Hampton Roads Showcase.

    2011 was a swift year for the Virginia girls as a total of 7 girls ran in the 17 minute range for 5000 meters and all of them broke 18 minutes on Saturday at Foot Locker South to help Team Virginia finish a close second to Team Florida in the seeded division race. Not only did Sophie Chase (17:06) and Megan Moye (17:11) run two of the faster times in Virginia high school history in Charlotte, but joining them under 18 minutes were Oakton freshmen Allie Klimkiewicz (17:42), Ocean Lakes senior Audrey Batzel (17:43), Millbrook senior Crystal Nelson (17:50), West Springfield sophomore Caroline Alcorta (17:52), and Cave Spring sophomore Katie Fortner (17:54).

The Ocean Lakes squads, coached by Mike Nestor, have often dispelled the belief that flatlanders cannot run hilly courses through competing well at major invitationals outside of the Tidewater area as well as leading the Eastern Region often with respectable finishes at the state championships at Great Meadow. 

  With a previous personal best of 6'6" from last spring in the high jump, Colonial Forge senior Jeremy Granderson's 6'10.25" was unexpected but thrilling on Saturday at the Atlantic Coast Invitational. Granderson's performance now ranks him #1 in the state of Virginia, #5 in the US, and #7 all-time in Virginia high school indoor history.   A list of the top 10 Eastern Region girls performers in each event (links to full rankings included) through January 12th. While Eastern Region sprinters, hurdlers, and jumpers certainly dominate the state leaderboard and top 10 rankings in the state, Princess Anne's Lizzie Cornell and Ocean Lakes' Audrey Batzel (both pictured above by Brandon Miles) put on a great battle for second place  behind a state leading and US #3 performance from Cosby's Megan Moye in the 3200 meter run at CNU. Cornell got out quicker in the first mile, but Batzel reeled her in after a conservative start and began to gap her in the last 800 meters. Cornell was able to come back on her Beach District rival in the final lap with both pushing each other for personal bests. Cornell was second at 11:07 and Batzel was third at 11:09, which are also second and fourth fastest in Group AAA this season.

The Ocean Lakes cross country program coached by Mike Nestor has proven that being a school from the Eastern Region does not automatically mean that you cannot compete with the best cross country teams in the fall and distance runners during the track season. Coach Nestor has coached two individual state champions in Stacey Nobles and Drew Paisley as well as an indoor state champion girls' 4x800 meter relay to go along with the numerous district and regional champion teams featuring many individuals qualifying for multiple state meets and All-State honors. At last week's Eastern Region Championships, Coach Nestor achieved a first since becoming the head coach of both programs a decade ago with the Ocean Lakes boys and girls sweeping the team titles. With few losses due to graduation from their current top seven for both boys and girls for the 2011 cross country season, Ocean Lakes can certainly try to go for another first next fall to become the first Eastern Region school with a pair of squads on the state meet podium. MileStat.com interviewed Coach Nestor following their regional title double as the teams hope to both break into the top five in state competition on Saturday...

Under the guidance of Coach Mike Nestor, it is hard to believe with the combined success which the Ocean Lakes boys and girls' cross country teams have enjoyed within the Eastern Region over the past decade with a total of six regional team titles prior to 2010 that both teams have never experienced first place together at the regional meet. The sweep finally happened on Thursday with steady rainfall throughout the day to muddy up and slow down the course at Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake.   Ocean Lakes junior Audrey Batzel (pictured above by Ryan Kelly) followed up her Beach District individual title with an Eastern Region title. Batzel posted a strong 18:37 5K performance in the mud to lead the Ocean Lakes girls to the team title with 52 points. Batzel and the Ocean Lakes girls got competition once again from Beach District rivals Princess Anne (2nd, 65 pts) and Lizzie Cornell (2nd, 18:45). Currently ranked #12 in Group AAA, Batzel is the Eastern Region's best chance at seeing an individual girl on the state meet podium while Cornell and Hickory's Teresa Williamson could sneak into the top 15 at Great Meadow with a breakthrough race. Joining Batzel and Cornell under 19 minutes were Southeastern District champ Williamson (3rd, 18:50) of Hickory and Cornell's sophomore teammate Ariel Briales (4th, 18:53). Advancing to state competition as teams with Ocean Lakes and Princess Anne were Kellam (3rd, 90 pts) as the third Beach District team and Southeastern District champions Grassfield (4th, 107 pts).   The Ocean Lakes boys exhibited their depth and strength as a whole team with their top runner Jon Winters running poorly due to illness and finishing back in the seventh spot for the team but still winning the Eastern Region team title. Nearly three Ocean Lakes runners cracked into the top 15 for All-Region honors with David Harrison (9th, 16:33), Brandon Clifford (15th, 16:37), and Austin Gillies (17th, 16:41). Connor Gulley (17:01) and Brandon Winters (17:04) completed their team scoring with a total of 71 points and mere top five spread of only 32 seconds. There was little separation at the Southeastern District Championships between the top three boys' squads and the breathing room did not grow an inch at the regional meet between Grassfield (2nd, 96 pts), Hickory (3rd, 100 pts), and Western Branch (4th, 105 pts) to match the Beach District girls by sending three teams to the state cross country meet. Grassfield ran well up front with three individuals among the top seven including race champion Jeremy Greenwald (pictured above by Ryan Kelly) as the senior clocked a great winning time in not ideal conditions at 15:42. Greenwald could be a darkhorse challenger for the Group AAA state title as he has not really faced major competition outside of the Tidewater area. MileStat.com visited arguably the Eastern Region's consistently top cross country program over the past decade in Ocean Lakes on Friday morning at Mount Trashmore Park in Virginia Beach. With the flat terrain of the sea level area, Mount Trashmore is one of the few places for teams like Ocean Lakes to get hill work in and prepare for racing more challenging cross country courses later this season. Their workout on Friday included repeats on a 1 mile loop which hit several hills and drills as well on a hill incline. More to come from the practice including photos.
