On stop #5 of the MileStat.com pre-season cross country practice tour, we will make our first of possibly several visits to Burke Lake Park, a historic course and training grounds for many of the schools in Fairfax County that comprised of the old Northern Region. The team which we will be visiting on Wednesday morning for a 4xmile tempo workout which they have planned made a lot of history over the past 12 months both as a team and as individuals in the Chantilly cross country program.

  The indoor state team champions South County will be strong favorites to become outdoor state champions as well with one of the greatest and most versatile athletes in Virginia high school track & field history on their squad in Felecia Majors able to win the state meet by herself as she did during the indoor state championships back in February. Majors is slated to compete in 7 events over the two day meet between four field events in the pole vault, high jump, long jump, and triple jump along with the 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes. Majors is a defending state champion in the pole vault, long jump, 400, and 200, while she is definitely capable of being All-State and challenging for first in the high jump, triple jump, and 100 meter dash. South County has other individuals and relays qualified for the meet (but all their relays will be without Majors now maxed out with 3 individual running events). Athletes with the best chances to possibly add a few more points for South County will be Morgan Knight in the pole vault and 100 meter hurdles as well as Mary Cate Scully in the 1600. Majors scored 49 points among 6 individual events at the 2013 VHSL Group AAA State Indoor Championships and added a few more points as leg on the 4x400 meter relay. Entered in 7 individual events for this weekend's 2013 VHSL Group AAA State Championships, Majors is likely to shatter any existing record of most points scored by any individual in one meet in AAA state meet history.

  South County senior Felecia Majors was reported to have leaped a US #1 mark of 19'11" in the long jump today at the =PR= Holiday Invitational in Landover, Maryland. The mark would place Majors at #6 on the Virginia high school all-time indoor list in the long jump. More to come from the meet as soon as we receive official meet results after the conclusion as well as photo gallery from Steven Pham.

  Only a handful of girls from Virginia with a sub 5 minute mile to her credit, Chantilly's Kendall Cowne showed that she can be equally successful at the 5000 meter distance this fall. Cowne was a top 5 finisher in three major invitationals during the course of the season at Monroe Parker (4th, 18:04 2.98mi), Oatlands (4th, 19:44 5K), and Glory Days (5th, 18:20 5K PR). After finishing 55th in her first state cross country championships last November, Cowne had a much better showing at Great Meadow this November with a 10th place All-State finish and time of 18:29. 

  The Lake Braddock girls did not qualify for the state meet last year, but as far as regional dominance through the years, no team can compare to the Bruins. Since the regional team championship and state qualifying process was instituted on the girls side beginning in 1978, Lake Braddock has qualified for the state meet an astounding 30 of the 34 years it has been in existence.

New MileStat.com Cream of the Crop Rankings as of October 10th with updated Virginia high school cross country top 15 team rankings and top 25 individual rankings in the state of Virginia. Two new number one ranked teams with the Northern Region squads Lake Braddock girls and Chantilly boys leapfrogging the Oakton girls and Blacksburg boys.

  It's a hearty welcome once again to all competitors, coaches, parents, other relative and friends, the numerous volunteer helpers, along with the usual long time supporters of high school cross country to the 20th Annual Glory Days Grill Invitational at Bull Run Regional Park on Saturday, October 13. Meet management looks forward, as usual, to another fine day of competitive racing, with approximately 2,500 runners representing 67 different schools from around the area who will compete in one of the nine races to be contested on Bull Run's 5,000 meter (3.1 miles) course.  

Updated high school cross country individual rankings for the state of Virginia after the first three weekends of meets in the 2012 with top 25 rankings for each classification and the All-Class Cream of the Crop rankings

The Northern Region is without question going to be the toughest region in Virginia to break into the top 15 at its regional championship meet for individual runners to advance onto the VHSL State Cross Country Championships at Great Meadow. The girls feature 11 of the top 25 ranked runners in Virginia regardless of classification, while 9 of the top 25 pre-season ranked runners in Group AAA are Northern Region boys.

  After staggering out our top 25 pre-season cross country individual rankings, we are combining them all together for a full article featuring all top 25 pre-season ranked high school runners in Virginia for the girls.

  MileStat.com will be staggering out a pre-season cross country top 25 returning individual runners list for the upcoming 2012 season in groups of 5 athletes over the next few weeks. Take a look at #21 through #25 on the girls' individual side which includes two runners coming off injuries, a sub 5 minute miler looking to prove herself in XC, and the lone remaining member of the state's fastest 4x800 meter relay team ever.

  Photos by Ed Lull   Swift 1600 meter races highlighted day one of the Concorde District Champions at the Prince George County's Sports & Learning Center. Foot Locker All-American Sean McGorty (4:15.29) of Chantilly battled down to the wire with Michael McNamee (4:15.78) of Oakton. McGorty won in the end, but both runners achieved personal bests under the old meet record of 4:16.75 (Phil Gaeta, Oakton, 2002) and the state's top two times this indoor season. The Oakton girls really dominated the 1600 meter run with only James Robinson's Macey Schweikert (3rd, 5:08.86) and Chantilly's Kendall Cowne (5th, 5:10.8) able to break up the Lady Cougars pack. Oakton had the top 2 finishers between freshmen Allie Klimkiewicz (1st, 5:06.70) and junior Briana Stewart (2nd, 5:07.42) while their other teammates Hailey Dougherty (4th, 5:09.61) and Kristi Carrigan (6th, 5:13.30) ran impressive times. If they decide to run a 4xmile relay at the indoor nationals, the Oakton girls could be very competitive in that event.   Herndon's Carina Peter leaped and sprinted out to a stellar first day of championship season with a US #12 personal best mark of 18'9.75" in the long jump, while running away with first in the 55 meter dash finals with an all-time best 7.14 clocking. Early season US 55 meter dash leader Ayo Raymond of James Robinson was able to cruise through his district meet in a finals time of 6.44 on Thursday. Raymond has been consistent with his times as the Robinson junior has clocked two 6.43's and two 6.44's this season. Another Robinson athlete Chioma Onyekwere is performing well at the right time of the season as last spring's third place finisher in the girls' shot put at the outdoor state championships threw just off 40 feet with a mark of 39'10.25".   After day one events, Oakton girls (75 pts) lead after 23 points from the 1600 meter run and another 20 points from Meghan Jean-Baptiste as a multi-event winner in the 55 meter hurdles (8.83) and high jump (5'0") as well as runner-up in the long jump. Meanwhile, defending boys' team champions Chantilly find themselves tied up with Oakton at 53 points even.     Concorde Championships Day 1 Results  

Sean McGorty and Chantilly boys continued what has been one of the program's most successful seasons in recent history so far with a big victory against many of Maryland's best at the Bull Run Invitational, which is the same venue for the Maryland State Championships.

Highlights and results from this past weekend's meets. A busy weekend of meets with at least 15 major invitationals being held across the state.   Apple Blossom Invitational - Sherando's Krista DeCeault continued to roll out impressive solo times in the northwest corner of the state including a 5:03 1600 PR and another 3200 performance well under 11 minutes at 10:38. Seumas O'Reilly of Warren County squeaked out a thrilling 1600 meter win over Skyline sophomore Thomas Madden with both running personal bests at 4:20. John Handley sophomore Britani Myers will be one of the top seeds in the 400 meter dash at the Group AA state meet after her 57.86 clocking at James Wood High School. Caroline Invitational - Great heights were reached in the pole competition at Caroline with Henrico's Stephanie Oleson clearing 12'6" and Riverbend's Nicholas Judy achieving a remarkable one foot PR with his 14'3" clearance. Erin Edmond of Riverbend continues to excel both on the track and in the jumps with a 5'4" first place showing in the high jump and motoring to a time of 57.38 in the 400 meter dash. Charles City Last Chance Invitational - With his recorded mark of 153'11", CJ Kelly of Matthews has thrown his hat into the ring as a contender for the Group A state title. Armstrong girls dominated many of the events at Charles City including strong performances from Alea Stevens in the 300 meter hurdles (46.09) and Ariel Barlow (5'4"). Colonial Forge Showcase - A smaller meet with right at the state auto required number of 10 schools competing, but not short on quality with top notch programs bringing in their depth and stars, especially in the distance races. The Cody Snyder and Marques Atkinson 800 meter match-up finally happened with the two Capital District stars battling to two of the state's faster times in the event with Snyder as the winner at 1:53.74 and Atkinson as the runner-up at 1:54.54. David Pennesi of Colonial Forge and Darren Barlow of Midlothian had a great race with a close finish producing fast times last weekend in the 3200 at Sports Backers Stadium and followed up this weekend with a nearly identical showing but in the 1600 instead with both under 4:20. Pennesi, only a junior, was the winner again at 4:17 with Barlow breaking 4:20 for the first time at 4:18 for second place. Indoor 1000 meter champ Kimberly Ficenec had a strong double in the 1600 and 800 with a 5:02 PR win against Hannah Lowery of Stafford (5:06) in the 1600, while also taking the 800 as well in 2:15. Lowery won the 3200 with another sub 11 run at 10:47. Midlothian sophomore Sean Willard put together a great race in the 3200 in a decisive 9:36 victory.  Cosmopolitan Invitational - Christiansburg junior Rochelle Evans has remained undefeated against state competition this spring with consistent marks well over 40 feet including a most recent season best throw of 43'3.50" at Salem High School on Friday. Evans also claimed first in the discus with a mark of 119'7". After chopping considerable time off his 3200 PR last week at the MileStat.com meet, Patrick Woodford of Patrick Henry dropped his 1600 time considerably with a 4:23 win. Defending Group AAA 110 hurdles champ Vincent Wyatt breezed to a sub 40 second time in the 300 hurdles. Draper Invitational - Sarah McCarthy of Bishop O'Connell had a breakthrough weekend in shattering the 11 minute barrier in the 3200 with a 10:46 performance. McCarthy also won the 1600 meter run in a 5:10 PR and the O'Connell girls won the 4x800 impressively in 9:44. Episcopal's Shantell Bingham is one of the state's best hurdlers, but showed she can jump too with a winning mark of 17'10" in the long jump. Bingham's teammate Reid Nickle had one of the best performances in the boys' events with his 1:57.40 victory in the open 800. Five Forks Track Classic - After his twin brother Marques ran a 1:54 800 the night before at Colonial Forge, Atlee senior Michael Atkinson showed that he can run just as fast as well in the open 800 with a 1:55.40 debut after being pushed by Huguenot's Keith Crawford (1:56.41). Cosby's Megan Moye had split around 2:13 in a few 4x800 relays indoor, but had not gotten the opportunity to run the open 800 until this past Saturday at Prince George which Moye posted the state's second fastest time in her 2:13.01 victory. Anna Spiers of Maggie Walker was a runner-up to Moye in the 800 at 2:18 after winning a close race with Forest Park's Allyson Bodmer (5:05) in the 1600 with a time of 5:04. Meadowbrook's Torie Cunningham lowered her season best in the 200 meter dash with a 24.85 clocking. Two of the state's top female vaulters were featured at Five Forks with Atlee's Cameron Overstreet (1st, 12'6") and Menchville's Melissa Wilson (2nd, 11'6"). Fluvanna Invitational - Tight finishes in the girls 1600 between Emma Helsel of Fauquier and Kaila Blackburn of Monacan both at 5:06 as well as the boys 800 between Michael Waller of Chancellor and Michael Idziak of Fork Union both at 1:55 were the top highlights from Fluvanna's Friday night meet. Chancellor's Maya Wright ran a great time in the 400 at 57.40, while also claiming first place in the 100 as well at 12.30. Fluvanna's own Hannah Meador continues to inch further up each weekend this spring to establish herself as the Group AA favorite in the pole vault with a second straight personal best clearance at 11'6". Fork Union's Jordan Roach has yet to be defeated this season against in-state competition in the discus throw after another mark over 160 feet. Gar-Field Invitational Nike Spring Invitational - Deep fields in the girls distance races with several girls under 5:10 in the 1600 and 2:20 in the 800 with two of the Northern Region's best battling for first in the 1600 between Myah Hicks (5:04.74) of Thomas Edison and Sarah Jane Underwood (5:06.34) of West Potomac. Underwood's teammate Dale Lescher ran a PR of 2:17 in the 800 to hold off James Robinson's Macey Schweikert (2:18) for the win. Chantilly sophomore Sean McGorty was just edged out by Northwest's (MD) Chris Miller in the 1600 with both at 4:21 along with West Springfield's Colin Taylor. Westfield boys have been a pleasant surprise in their resurgence in the 4x800 meter relay as they just missed joining the sub 8 minute club with their time of 8:00.42. The South Lakes boys figure to be in contention for the regional team title in a few weeks and will be relying heavily on Sean Price, who produced a mark of 45'10" in the triple jum at Nike Spring. Suffolk Invitational - Speed was most present at Lakeland High School this weekend led by two smoking times posted by Christal Peterson of Phoebus dipping well under 12 seconds in the 100 meter dash with a 11.72 clocking and following that performance up with a personal best time of 55.82 in the 400 meter dash to showcase her great range. Lakeland's Jaquan Demiel represented well on his home track as he pulled out two victories from strong challenges in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles by Granby's Justin Williams with top times of 14.47 and 39.14 respectively. The King's Fork boys threw down the state's fastest time this spring in the 4x400 meter relay as they nearly dipped under 3:20 with their final time of 3:20.88 as Granby pressed them in second at 3:22. A stacked girls 300 hurdles race with five girls running 45 seconds or faster with defending Group AAA state champ Vamonie Boddie of Phoebus clocking a season best and near state best at 43.99. Western Branch sophomore Josh Marriner had recorded a big mark over 23 feet in the long jump last summer, but had not leaped as far until this past Saturday with his best mark leap of 23'1.50". T.C. Williams Invitational - Tallwood's Zack Fanelty has a been consistent and strong performer in the open 800 this spring as he went north this weekend to seek new competition which resulted in a 1:55.62 win. Tallwood teammate Jordan Anderson also took home a first place medal in the discus with his field besting mark of 157'4". Another Beach District star transplanted for a weekend in the Northern Region impressed at T.C. Williams with Green Run's Chelsea Utley clocking a time of 44.56 in the 300 hurdles. TJ Penultimate Experience - Despite getting late to the meet and almost missing the start of his race, the talent of Annandale junior Ahmed Bile surpassed the lack of a real warm-up with Bile rolling out a swift state leading time of 1:52.33 in the 800 meter run. Bile's teammate John Jenkins was only a hundredth of a second off his PR in the 110 meter hurdles in a 14.45 victory at TJ. Adrian Thomas of Stone Bridge had yet to break 50 seconds in the open 400 before this weekend, but decided to take care of breaking 49 seconds as well in the process with a breakthrough 48.84 clocking. Virginia Beach Invitational - First Colonial boys took their high flying act to Landstown this weekend with a impressive across the board showing in the jump events with indoor state champ Allen Boardley winning the triple jump with a mark of 45'11.50", while teammates Dsean Brown and Avion Brown went 1-2 in the high jump with clearances of 6'8" and 6'6" respectively. Brown also claimed first in the long jump with a mark of 22'8.50". Meanwhile, Justin Burke took care of business on the track for First Colonial as a double winner in the 100 and 200 including a sub 22 second clocking in the 200. Grassfield swept the 800 with Amanda Smith taking first at 2:16, while Jeremy Greenwald ran an open 800 PR time of 1:54.29. Grassfield's Navia Howell ruled the throws with top marks in the shot put and discus. John Marshall junior Mary Allen put together a stellar double in the 400 and 200 with times of 56.60 and 24.70 as teammate Breanna Taylor was a close runner-up in the 200 under 25 seconds as well. Kempsville Taylor Frenia and Oscar Smith's Brandon Ruffin had a competitive showdown in the discus with both recording marks well over 160 feet with Frenia besting Ruffin at 165'5". Trey Holloway of King's Fork and K'vonte Scott of Princess Anne are emerging stars on the state level in the hurdles, especially after their times at Landstown with Holloway at 14.64 in the 110 hurdles and Scott approaching 39 seconds flat in the 300 hurdles. Despite not much competition to press her, Audrey Batzel of Ocean Lakes made a fierce assault on breaking 5 minutes in the 1600 as she finished just off the time at 5:02.  VMI High School Track Classic - Great DMR races at the end of the meet with the Hidden Valley girls easily distancing themselves from Blacksburg for a time of 12:04, while Blacksburg and Western Albemarle boys produced two of the state's fastest times in the events at 10:38 and 10:42 with George Carter and Derek Armstrong anchoring for both teams. Blacksburg's anchor legs George Carter and Hannah Brown were double winners earlier in a short span in the 1600 and 800 meter races as Brown posted some swift times at 4:54 and 2:15. Oakton sophomore Meghan Jean-Baptiste scored in a handful of events while picking up victories in the high jump and 100 meter hurdles. Oakton also swept the 4x800 meter relays earlier with times of 9:43 for the girls and 8:06 for the boys. Robert E. Lee girls had two double event individual champions in the field events with Daquaa Scott in the shot put and discus and Karissa Jenkins in the long and triple jump. Blacksburg freshmen Kendall Wiles has continued her sensational indoor season into outdoors in the sprints including a personal best 57.37 in the 400 meter dash, while taking runner-up to teammate Alyn Carr in the 200 meter dash. Another freshmen winner was found in the boys discus as Matthew Zajac expects to be even better than his older brother Michael in the throws. The morning 3200 races produced solid winning times from Hidden Valley's Annie LeHardy at 11:03 and Blacksburg's Frank Locascio at 9:37.
