US #3 all-time 500 meter performance of 1:11.78 by Lauryn Ghee of Grassfield (VA) at the 2016 VHSL 6A State Championships in Hampton breaking Francena McCorory's previously held state record in the event.
While Kate Murphy has enjoyed great health and success for her junior year (NXN All-American, Millrose Mile champ & 4:41 record), her top competition in Rachel McArthur has had to deal with setback in injuries (both XC and indoor) this year. One of the state's best rivalries from a year ago had been fairly quiet until this 1600 state race with McArthur giving Murphy a great challenge down to the finish line with both timed at 4:51. Both under the 6A meet record.
Future University of Florida teammates Grant Holloway of Grassfield and Josephus Lyles of T.C. Williams went down to the wire in the 6A boys 500 meter dash with Holloway just edging Lyles out by a hundredth of a second in a US leading time of 1:03.35.
