Deep Run sophomore Novak scores big win at Florida Relays!

Deep Run sophomore Matthew Novak (pictured by Jeff Adams) may have been the state's only high school competitor at this weekend's Florida Relays, but being the lone wolf from Virginia appeared to work with his breakthrough victory and personal best time of 4:16.06 to win the invitational 1600 meter run on Friday in Gainesville. Novak headed all the way down to Florida on his spring break with family to enjoy a track meet with his older brother Daniel, who is a college junior competing for the University of South Carolina. Without a doubt, Novak winning the invitational division 1600 race in a state leading time at the Florida Relays surpasses his previous greatest win in claming the Central Region indoor 1000 meter title last year as a freshmen with an outstanding kick. After getting good position in the final quarter mile in 62 seconds and in second place position, Novak fell back in the field on the next lap with a split around 2:10 at the halfway point. The race-savy underclassmen was then able to manuever his back up near the leaders on the third lap before making an aggressive surge and move building into the bell to power beyond the leaders into first place and really kick it into top gear to pull away for a victory in the Sunshine state.

Felecia Majors shifts into another gear while on spring break

Felecia Majors and the rest of her South County teammates traveled southbound this past weekend while on spring break to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and competed in the Beach Run Invitational. It turned out that Majors and South County were not only on vacation time while down in Myrtle Beach, but getting fast times as well. Majors dominated the meet in numerous events just like she does almost every weekend back home in Virginia including wins in the pole vault (11'0") and long jump (19'6"), but in particular, Majors really took it up a notch on the track with the fastest performances that we have ever seen from her in a 11.91 clocking in the 100 meter dash and another meet record performance of 23.92 in the 200 meter dash. Both times are easily VA #1's by a large margin. South County just missed winning the team title by one point after strong efforts by Majors and her teammates. (Photo by Ryan Kelly)

Brickhill runs state leading 2:14 800 against collegiates

University of Virginia recruit Micah Brickhill isn't waiting to mix it up with the next level of runners found in college. The Liberty Christian Academy senior Brickhill has started her outdoor season racing unattached in two college meets as she raced at the Raleigh Relays in the 400 meter dash last weekend and then raced the 800 meter run at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational this past Saturday. Brickhill finished fourth in the race (which had two under 2:10) to help pull her along to a new personal best 800 meter time of 2:14.39, which makes her easily the state leader in the middle distance event at this point of the young outdoor season.

US top 10 performances were also recorded in the girls 400 meter hurdles by Great Bridge's Heather Smith and Bayside's Summer Walter. Neither hurdler improved upon their PR's, but a great battle nonetheless between the returning VA 3A 300 meter hurdles state champ Smith (1st, 1:04.32) and the New Balance Nationals pentathlon All-American Walter (2nd, 1:04.97).

Davon Grayson of King's Fork improved by a dramatic margin over 2 feet with his leap of 23'4" in the long jump on Friday at Lakeland High School to move the senior Grayson to the top of the Virginia state leaderboard.

New state leading times were produced for both boys and girls in the 1600 meter sprint medley relays by the Western Branch boys at 3:37.42 and the Phoebus girls at 4:22.56.

CNU'S 29TH ANNUAL HS CAPTAINS CLASSIC

April 05, 2013 - April 06, 2013 @ CNU Track in Newport News, VA

Hosted by Christopher Newport University      Official Meet Web Site

Grassfield's Grant Holloway does not look like a freshmen nor does he compete like one. Holloway dominated the hurdles races at CNU with a 14.83 clocking in the 110 meter hurdles to begin his day, which he later followed up with a second victory in the 300 meter hurdles with a 39.92 performance. Holloway also placed second in the high jump and anchored the Grassfield boys 4x100 meter relay to swift time of 43.36 to run away with the event. (Photo by Ryan Kelly)

L.C. Bird junior Nichelle Scott had an impressive double in Newport News on Saturday at the CNU Captain's Classic. With only the 300 meter hurdles as her rest in between, Scott won both the 400 and 800 meter races with the fastest times of the day in times of 57.98 and 2:21.97 respectively. Later in the season with fresher legs, better weather, and more competition, Scott can certainly roll to even faster times as shown last summer at the AAU Junior Olympic National Championships when she was an All-American in both the 400 and 800 with PR races of 56.38 (prelim performance) and 2:14.62. COLONIAL RELAYS

April 05, 2013 - April 06, 2013 @ Zable Stadium in Williamsburg, VA

Hosted by College of William & Mary      Official Meet Web Site

Loudoun County senior Patrick Joseph only had one race opportunity to qualify for the Penn Relays mile since his school and county do not offer indoor track. After taking out the first 440 yards in 63 seconds for the Colonial Relays high school boys mile on Friday, Joseph had Cavender Salvadori of Delaware and Norfolk Academy's Grant Wiggins take over the pacing duties midway through before Joseph was able to rally in the final 100 meters to pass Wiggins (who had a big PR race for second in 4:19) for a 4:18.54 victory for the Virginia Tech recruit Joseph racing in front of his future coaches and teammates.

The state of Pennsylvania ruled the high school DMR races on Friday at William & Mary with the LaSalle College boys picking up the W with a fine time of 10:17, while Germantown Friends were the girls winners at 12:11.54. However, there were some impressive splits among the Virginia girls' squads including a 3:47 lead-off 1200 meter leg for Grafton's Nicole Goff. Other notable splits included a 2:18 800 split from Mountain View's Jean Rouse as well as a 5:08 1600 PR for Megan Rebholz of Colonial Forge to help her team likely qualify for the Penn Relays in the event in third place at 12:29.

The West Springfield girls continue to their great tradition of producing fast 4x800 meter relays into the 2013 outdoor season as their quartet opened with a state best time of 9:33 at the Carolyn Legard Relays on Saturday. Two other VA #1 times were produced at W.T. Woodson in the girls' relays this weekend including the Chantilly 4x1600 meter relay (22:02.59) and the James Robinson 1600 meter SMR (4:12.50) (Photo by Steven Pham)

FALCONS' T&F CHALLENGE

April 06, 2013 @ Abingdon HS Track in Abingdon, VA

Hosted by Abingdon High School

Walker Mogen had time to check his watch in the 4x800 meter relay at the Falcons Challenge as he began his anchor leg for his Group A squad Radford, which took first in an impressive winning time of 8:11. Next year with the new classification system, the 4x800 meter relay is expected to be offered in championship season for the small schools which it currently is not the case during the outdoor season for Group A schools like Radford. It appears that the small schools like Radford have no problem finding four middle distance runners at their schools to put together a formdiable 4x800. (Photo by Flip Bishop)

GLEN ALLEN INVITATIONAL

April 06, 2013 @ Glen Allen HS Track in Glen Allen, VA

Hosted by Glen Allen High School

Midlothian's Alice Babashak had a stellar meet at the first annual Glen Allen Invitational as she swept the hurdles with PR's across the board in not only her victories in the 100 meter hurdles (15.04) and 300 meter hurdles (45.24), but also well as in the 200 meter dash (3rd, 26.43) and triple jump (4th, 34'6"). Big improvements for Babashak in her first outdoor meet of the season after having season bests of 15.60 in the 100 meter hurdles and 46.80 in the 300 meter hurdles last spring. THE RUNNING STORE CITY-COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

April 06, 2013 @ Patriot High School in Nokesville, VA

Hosted by Osbourn Park

The Woodbridge girls were able to edge out Forest Park by a mere 1/4 of a point to claim the Prince William county title at the Running Store Championship meet held at Patriot High School in Nokesville. Their 4x400 meter relay, which ran the state's second fastest time ever indoors at the indoor nationals last month, saved the day at meet's end with a state leading time of 3:57.89 to win the event. Osbourn Park actually helped them to the title by displacing Forest Park to third place in the race with a sub 4 minute relay themselves in second place at 3:58. Their 4x400 meter relay winning time was the second VA #1 performance of the meet by Woodbridge as hurdler Olivia Coopwood moved herself to the top of the state leaderboard in the 300 meter hurdles with a 45.11 clocking.
