Gojekian Twilight Classic Coverage

South County's Felecia Majors on Friday night at Woodbridge High School for the Gojekian Twilight Classic: Girls 400m Dash - VA #4 57.64 - 1st Place Girls Long Jump - VA #2 19'0" - 1st Place Girls Pole Vault - VA #1 12'0" - 1st Place Girls Triple Jump - VA #1 39'1" - 1st Place   Other top performances from Woodbridge on Friday night:   Osbourn Park's Breanna Walker clocked a state leading FAT time of 12.17 in the 100 meter dash, while also doubling back later to go 1-2 with teammate Kiana Hairston in the 200 meter dash. The Osbourn Park girls dominated the sprints with relay victories in the 4x100 and 4x400   C.D. Hylton's Hali Mcfadgen and Heritage's (Leesburg) Marcus Finney both swept the hurdle races with Mcfadgen posting times of 14.99 (100H) and 45.29 (300H) respectively, while Finney defeated previous state leader Chris Blaylock of Battlefield with a VA #1 performance of 38.64 in the 300 meter hurdles.   South County distance runner Mary Cate Scully chopped off a whopping 19 seconds from her previous PR in the 3200 meter run with a very surprising and impressive run of 10:54 in the 3200 meter run.    Boys 100 meter dash state leader Michael Thomas-Brown was unable to lower his 10.72 season best, but still won the 100 meter dash with another sub 11 clocking at 10.99.  Thomas-Brown was able to extend his state leading mark in the long jump though by a half of an inch with his leap of 23'5.50".   The girls SMR saw Battlefield and Forest Park loading up with their top two half milers on anchor between Ellison Grove for Battlefield and Brianna Krumholz for Forest Park, which led to some quick times in the rarely contested event with Battlefield as the winners at 4:08 and Forest Park trailing in second at 4:10.  Meanwhile, the Forest Park boys were not only able to win the boys' sprint medley in a solid time of 3:38, but also take the 4x100 meter relay as well in 43.62.   The throwing events were dominated by two individuals between Battlefield's Galissia Cause and Fauquier's Luca Carrillo as each thrower claimed first in both the shot put and discus. Cause went big with her first throw ever over 40 feet in the shot put at 42'9.50", while Carillo had a breakthrough performance in the shot as well with his first 50 footer at 51'2".   Group AA is starting to become the place for quarter milers this spring with Loudoun County's Steven Graham running a 48 second open 400 two weeks ago and now Fauquier's Thomas White knocking on that door as well. White won the 400 meter dash at the Gojekian Twilight Classic with a lifetime best time of 49.17 to follow up his 49.58 victory at the Knights Track Classic last weekend.    More to come from the Gojekian Twilight Classic...   Gojekian Twilight Classic - Complete Results Race Videos - To be posted later this weekend

Northern Virginia Invite - Day 1 Highlights

Looks to be another deep year for the girls 3200 meter run in Virginia with two more girls breaking 11 minutes this spring on Friday at the Northern Virginia Invitational with two sophomores in West Springfield's Carolina Alcorta (10:54.67) and Robert E. Lee's Bailey Kolonich (10:57.20) battling it out for first in the race with Alcorta ultimately the winner. Thomas Edison sophomore Louis Colson won the 3200 convincingly for the boys in 9:31 and was followed by two much much improved runners producing big PR runs in Yorktown's Ryan Hart (9:38) and Lake Braddock's Alex Corbett (9:39).   Another Edison excelled on their home track in jumper Anna Williams, who leaped to one of the state's better marks in the triple jump in this young outdoor season with her leap of 37'11" at the Northern Virginia Invitational. Shaquera Leach, a Group AA state title contender at 400 meters from Briar Woods High School, won her specialty with ease in her 57.22 clocking. Leach also showed versatility with a victory in the high jump at a clearance of 5 feet. Westfield's Nathan Kiley finished second to Rajee Dunbar from Gonzaga in DC, but was pulled along to another swift low 49 second performance this season at 49.15 (ran 49.01 last week at the Leslie Sherman Memorial Invite) as he seeks for his first sub 49.   The Lake Braddock girls faired well in the technical events with sophomore Rachel Fasana clearing a personal best height of 10'3" in the pole vault, while junior Jennie Fofi edged out a pair of Thomas Edison hurdles for first place in the 100 meter hurdles at a 15.55 clocking to drop 7 tenths off her previous all-time best.  Northern Virginia Invitational - Day 1 Results

Taco Bell: U.S. no. 1 in 400 girls hurdles, Burcham runs 9-flat 3,200

COLUMBIA -- Kiah Seymour, a senior from Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C., set a new U.S. no. 1 mark in the high school girl’s 400-meter hurdles Saturday, crossing the finish line in 1:01.95 and beating the previous mark of Jennifer Cannon of Tennessee High School of 1:02.60, which she ran last weekend at the Beach Run Invitational in Myrtle Beach.

Lexington boys 4x800 no. 2 S.C. all-time, 7:51.72

COLUMBIA -- Lexington High’s boys relay team continued its impressive late-season run Friday, narrowly capturing first place in the 4x800-meter finals at the opening night of the 20th Annual Taco Bell Track and Field Classic held at Spring Valley High, and setting a meet record in the process.

Shaw's Shakedown: A look at Taco Bell Classic

Year 20!!  Quite a milestone.  It all started with the first “rubber” track at Spring Valley and a commitment by Coach Jones to make it a little bit better each year.  No doubt he does make it better each year.  What a palace Harry Parone stadium has become.  Combine Coach Jones’ desire to put on a meet that athletes will remember at a high school facility that is second to none and you end up with some pretty rich tradition.
