Even though last weekend had many great meets, with some pretty good performances, this week marks the first mega-meet with the annual Knights Crossing meet happening. This meet will be by far the largest meet in the state and thus warrants a preview for what we will find out, see, and should look for this weekend.

Highlights and coverage from Saturday's races (Group 3A, 2A, & 1A) at the 2013 VHSL State Cross Country Championships. 

Coverage from Tuesday's Group 3A West Regional Championship meet at Panorama Farms outside of Charlottesville.

Many of the former top programs in the old Group AA classification find themselves in the new Group 3A West Region, which hosts its regional championship meet on Tuesday to kick off regional week. Regular cross country powerhouses such as Blacksburg, Western Albemarle, and Hidden Valley get to match up prior to the state championships, which could see all three on the podium together on November 16th at Great Meadow. Blacksburg and Hidden Valley girls were familiar foes in the old Region IV, while Western Albemarle now joins them as a new regional rival after spending years in Region II. 

Both Blacksburg junior Bonnie Angermeier (18:39) and Albemarle senior Ryan Thomas (15:55) shifted into high gear on the final straightaway at Panorama Farms to claim individual victories at the Albemarle Invitational. At Panorama Farms on Saturday, Albemarle senior Ryan Thomas will get one of his last opportunities to race on his home course as his team welcomes 35 schools to the grassy rolling hills of Panorama for the Albemarle Invitational. The 2013 Group AAA state indoor 1000 meter champion Thomas is coming off his best race of the season with a personal best 5K clocking of 15:25 at Great American. He is the top returnee from last year's Albemarle Invitational when he finished 4th with a time of 16:02.

The Blacksburg boys and girls dominated in their season opener at the Blue Demon Invitational in Christiansburg with a sweep of the team titles and individual titles. 

MileStat.com releases the 2013 pre-season "Cream of the Crop" cross country rankings for the top 25 boys individual runners in the state of Virginia.

Pre-season cross country virtual meet previews for the two sectionals in the new Group 3A classification (East & West) based on season best 5K performances from last fall. The top 6 teams and top 10 individuals not on one of the top 6 advancing teams will move onto state competition from the sectional/regional championships.

USATF Junior Olympics cross country All-American Reider Strehler of Trinity Episcopal is the lone private school representative on this year's All-MileStat.com boys cross country team.

  The Blacksburg boys were so stout this year that a runner of the caliber of Noah Combs could have easily been the #5 runner on a slightly sub-par race day with 5 guys on his team hovering around 16 minutes or faster for 5K throughout the season. Combs will be the lead returnee for next year's Blacksburg squad, which will graduate many key members of this year's team which not only continued their streak of Group AA state championships, but advanced onto the Nike Cross Nationals and finished 10th in Oregon.

  At the 2012 Nike Cross Nationals, the state of Virginia was represented by a team and a pair of individuals led the defending four-time Group AA state champion Blacksburg boys earning the highest finish ever by a Virginian boys' squad at NXN with a 10th place finish of 257 points to become the first Southeast boys' team qualifier to place among the top 10 in meet history.

  The Blacksburg boys had one of the most dominant wins in state meet history with their team score under 20 points in the Group AA race at Great Meadow last Saturday. The Bruins will still be in the running for a fifth straight title, but it will be in a new classification in the new 3A and the margin of victory might be significantly more narrow between them and this year's AA state runner-up Lafayette.
