Time once again for one of the showcase events on the indoor track and field calendar with the Virginia AAA state championships to be held March 3-4 at the George Mason University Fieldhouse in Fairfax, Va. Defending girls team champion Bethel will be looking for their third consecutive title, led by one of the nation\'s truly outstanding performers in senior Francena McCorory while defending boys indoor champion Deep Creek should also be in the mix once again as they try to fend off a group of challengers led by Great Bridge and E.C. Heat sheets for the AAA State Meet to be held this Friday and Saturday, March 3rd and 4th at the George Mason University Fieldhouse in Fairfax, Virginia.
It was reported in this morning\'s Virginian-Pilot that Landstown star Percy Harvin was suspsended from athletic competition by the VHSL following several altercations during his recent basketball season to prompt Virginia\'s high school sports governing body to make the decision. Thus, Harvin will not be able to compete in this weekend\'s VHSL Group AAA State Indoor Track Meet. There is an appeal process that will occur next week that may allow Harvin to compete in outdoors, but not in time for this weekend\'s meet at George Mason University in Fairfax. Last June, Harvin made VHSL history by becoming the first athlete to win five state track titles in the same meet.
Three state meet records were set on day one of competition at the VHSL Group AAA State Meet held at George Mason University\'s indoor track facility in Fairfax. Deep Creek junior Ashley Gatling kicked off the meet record breaking day by tying her national leading height of 5\'9\" in the high jump. Mike Morrison of Great Bridge had the goal in mind heading into this weekend\'s state meet of breaking the old state meet record mark set by former great vaulter from Great Bridge, Lawrence Johnson and he certainly accomplished the feat and then some with a successful clearance of 17\'0.50\". Then in one of the most dramatic moments of the meet that few actually witnessed since the final running event was over 30 minutes ago, Centreville\'s Britni Finch nailed a jump of 19\'10\" to better a clutch 19\'1.50\" final jump from Hermitage senior Queen Harrison to win the long jump competition for the final event of day one. Day one pics from Mr. Herzog and video from Brandon Miles are now posted. More to come...
