Before the month of August ends, Virginia's best teams will have already face off in a very early season battle at this Saturday's Great Meadow Invitational. The meet moved from its traditional date on the first weekend of September and still has attracted many of Virginia's top ranked teams and individuals. In the boys race, the Blacksburg boys and Mountain View boys are considered two of the state's top returning teams. Meanwhile, the defending four-time AAA state champions of Midlothian and defending three-time AA state champions of Blacksburg will match up as well in the girls' race. The individual races will be thrillers as well, especially for the girls with the likes of Kathleen Lautzenheiser, Kaitlyn Davis, Joanna Stevens, Kathleen Stevens, Amy Witt, and Julie Strange. It will be interesting to see the results on Saturday compared to the results on second Saturday of November when athletes return to Great Meadow for the VHSL State Championships. Meanwhile, the boys race will feature some of the best runners from this year's junior class including Brayden Burleigh, George Carter, Cody Snyder, and Silas Frantz.
