In-depth event by event previews of all the field events for the 2011 VHSL Group AAA State Indoor Championships. Several state meet records are in jeopardy including Dan Krueger's 1978 shot put record by Woodbridge senior Isaiah Simmons as well as Western Branch's Keilah Tyson having already exceeded the long jump meet record at Boo Willliams earlier this season. Atlee's Cameron Overstreet already owns the Virginia high school indoor record in the pole vault at 12'10" and now can eclipse Lizzie Powell's year old state indoor meet record this weekend. Running events preview to be posted late Thursday night.
With the 4x800 meter relays being held on Friday, MileStat.com has rushed to release its preview on the only running event finals for day one at the VHSL Group AAA State Indoor Championships. Seven girls' teams come into the state meet with times under 9:40 and several of these teams look to join top seeded West Potomac (9:27.13), who is looking to get over the hump and finally win a state title after contending for several years in a row. The first sub 8 minute 4x800 meter relay of the indoor season in Virginia might be produced at the Group AAA State Indoor Championships. Grassfield boys, anchored by 1000 US #2 performer Jeremy Greenwald with a 1:54 split, nearly broke the barrier at the Eastern Region Championships, but will be chased by a handful of other serious state title hopefuls.
A new feature from our MileSplit Network headquarters in Florida is a weekly video highlights show called "Sprint to the Finish" by Todd Grasley. Check out this week's highlights show on the Virginia 3A state indoor championships from this past weekend. Give us feedback and let us know if this is something that you would like to see produced more frequently for Virginia! Sprint to the Finish's Video Recap of the VHSL Group AAA State Indoor Championships
Kimberley Ficenec’s principal never gets her name right. In fact, just about everyone she meets has trouble saying it. One time, someone mispronounced her last name “finance.” “It’s hard,” Ficenec, whose parents are from Czech Republic, says of her last name. “I’m not going to lie. If I met someone with a name like that I’d probably get it wrong, too.” Folks will probably start getting it right now that Ficenec (pronounced fitz-uh-nitz) has made everyone take notice by winning a state title. The Mountain View junior won the 1,000-meter run at the Virginia AAA championships Saturday in Hampton, crossing the line at Boo Williams Sportsplex in 2 minutes 54.47 seconds, the fastest time by a Virginia girl this season.
