Athlete Spotlight: Erin Wheeler (Northside) Brandon Miles Nov 2, 2010

Northside senior Erin Wheeled had a nice tuneup race leading up to the VHSL State Championships next weekend. She put down an 18:09 5K personal best performance at Rockingham County Fairgrounds to claim the Region III cross country title. Wheeler's performance on Tuesday certainly sets the tone for the rest of this regional week for other top female runners in the state to try to match her run. Less than 12 months ago, Wheeler was running over 20 minutes for 5K and not in serious contention for All-State top 15 honors. Fast forward to present day and Wheeler is now setting herself up to be one of the top darkhorse challengers for the Group AA state race and has a goal to shatter 18 minutes next month at Foot Locker South. interviewed Wheeler following her big win at the Region III Championships... Athlete Journal: Erin Wheeler (Entry #2) Brandon Miles Oct 10, 2010

Northside senior Erin Wheeler's second journal entry for Wheeler (pictured above by John Herzog) this past Saturday competed in her last major invitational race in what has been a very successful regular season including several victories and fast times in big meets. Wheeler placed fourth in a very competitive Albemarle Invitational with a time of 19:07 on an especially difficult Panorama Farms 5K course due to this weekend's warm weather. Blue Ridge District Championships Virtual Meet Preview Brandon Miles Oct 27, 2009

Northside junior Erin Wheeler (pictured by Brandon Miles) is emerging as the best runner at her school since Catherine White graduated. Wheeler has ran a season best time of 19:28 for 5000 meters and has finished high in many invitationals this season to draw her consideration as a contender for the Region III individual title. She competes on Wednesday at Lord Botetourt High School's home course for the Blue Ridge District title and looks to lead her team to the title as well. Alleghany's Cimarron Nicely will attempt to win his first of many Blue Ridge District titles as the freshmen has a great shot of winning along with the William Byrd pair of Nick Leffell and Kevin O'Connor. All-Decade Team Selection - Catherine White Brandon Miles Aug 16, 2009

Catherine White (pictured left by David Fleenor) was the winningest state champion of this past decade amassing a total of 15 state titles in cross country and track. She finished out her high school in grand style by winning all three distance races (3200, 1600, and 800) at the 2007 VHSL Group AA State Outdoor Championships. White also shined on the national level earning All-American honors five times. She was named the state's Gatorade Athlete of the Year in track & field as a high school junior and senior. White ran at a high level throughout high school as she broke 5 minutes for 1600 meters in 17 meets and ran under 11 minutes in 31 meets to go down as truly one of the all-time greats in Virginia high school history among female distance runners.   Her talents have taken her to Fayetteville, Arkansas as the Roanoke native has been sensational in her collegiate career for the Lady Razorbacks so far competing on the World Juniors team, earning NCAA All-American honors, and winning SEC titles.

Group AA State Meet Girls Team Predictions Brandon Miles May 31, 2007's Brandon Miles makes his top five team prediction for the Group AA girls in this weekend's state championships. Charlottesville girls are picked to win led by Rashawnda James (pictured left by John Herzog at the Dogwood Track Classic) and a possible state meet record breaking 4x100 to follow up their indoor state title with an outdoor one. In a close second is Region II champs Park View, who will have very reliable points in the throwing events from Natalie Baird and her two fellow junior teammates Lauren Tomlinson and Julia Anyaugo in a possible 1-2 finish in both the shot put and discus. Their distance girls will have to deal with brutal heat and tough competition, but the Blacksburg girls should slip into the top three. Meanwhile, Kristin Smith and Catherine White can to score 30 or more (for Smith at least) the points for their teams in Rustburg and Northside to take top five showings. More pre-meet insight on the Group AA State Meet to follow... Team: Girls Distance Runner of the Year Brandon Miles Mar 18, 2007

Northside senior Catherine White has been named the girls distance runner of the year for the 2007 Indoor Track Team. White was the state leader for 1000 and 1600 meters, while picking up her 11th and 12th Group AA state titles. White comes up with BIG race in Reebok BIG mile Brandon Miles Jan 28, 2007

Despite being snubbed for the second year in a row in having an invitation extended to her for the Millrose Games high school mile, Northside senior Catherine White took advantage of the opportunity to race against some of the Millrose invitees this past Saturday at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games at the Reggie Lewis Center. White beat two of the Millrose invitees (Brittany Sheffey NY and Colleen Weatherbee MA) to finish fifth in an elite field of 14 athletes with an indoor personal best time of 4:55.38. Her US #5 performance in Boston was only two seconds off of her outdoor mile best of 4:53 in an All-American showing at Nike Outdoor Nationals.

Keydet Invitational Meet Summary Brandon Miles Jan 6, 2007

Mills Godwin senior Anne Marie Gordon likes drama apparently. Not only is she in theatre at school, but seems to like to wait till the final attempt when clearing personal best heights in the pole vault. At last March\'s National Scholastic Indoor Championships, Gordon cleared 11\'7.25\" on her third attempt at the height. On Saturday at the Keydet Invitational, Gordon cleared a best height of 11\'9\" in similar dramatic fashion on her final attempt at the height.

Runnin With The Wolves was a Rocktoberfest! Brandon Miles Oct 21, 2006

If anyone thought that Northside senior Catherine White was having an off season this fall they better guess again. Especially her fellow Foot Locker South favorites throughout the region. White broke the meet and course record at the Runnin\' With The Wolves Rocktoberfest Invitational by 23 seconds with a time of 18:24 competing in the open race. The returning Foot Locker All-American had set the course mark last year in a time of 18:47. Instead of competing in the varsity high school girls division, White opted to compete in the open division as she was paced by former Northside teammate and 2006 AA state outdoor 3200 meter champion Zac Edwards. Meanwhile, in the most exciting finish of the meet, Jefferson Forest junior Matthew Kadak was able to surge past Christiansburg\'s Caleb Hughes right before the finish to take the win on his home course in 16:56 with Hughes a tick back at 16:57. Team champions were Christiansburg boys and Jefferson Forest girls. Martinsville\'s Amy Smith won the varsity girls\' race in a solid time of 20:28 on the challenging 5K course layout found at Wolf Branch Farm. An outstanding meet run by Coach Jerome Loy and the rest of the Jefferson Forest crew that I would definitely highly recommend to any coach to put on their schedule next fall. BEST START TO A RACE, great music all over the course, creek crossings, leaps over logs, and overall great atmosphere for a cross country event! More to come from Runnin With The Wolves including quotes from the winners, story, photos, and video clips as was on-site with Brandon Miles and Ryan Call. True cross country weather and course conditions greet runners at Great Meadows Brandon Miles Oct 7, 2006

A steady downpour of rain that started yesterday and continued throughout today made Saturday\'s Octoberfest Invitational at Great Meadows a mud slop-fest as two over flowing creek crossings and long stretches of mud and puddles made for tough race conditions for the high school runners throughout the day. Not a day for anyone to run a personal best, but some outstanding performances were recorded throughout the day. Northside senior Catherine White took the \"A\" girls race in a time of 19:08.07, but more impressive was James River junior Kristen Wolfe only finishing nine seconds off the Foot Locker All-American in a time of 19:17.81. Meanwhile, Radford junior Nathan Brame pulled away from the field midway to come away with a 17:10 victory in the \"A\" race with Manchester senior Andrew Duty charging hard into a second place run of 17:16. Maryland\'s best in Quince Orchard (142 pts) as well as NTN Southeast #9 ranked squad knocked off SE #7 Thomas Jefferson (161 pts) for the \"A\" boys team title. The Northern Region took three of the top four team places in the \"A\" girls\' race with James Robinson (151 pts) finishing ahead of higher ranked AAA squads Langley (2nd, 178 pts) and Maggie Walker (3rd, 195 pts). Complete meet summary is posted with photos as well as video clips (clips of runners crossing creeks a MUST SEE) and a photo gallery from Octoberfest! Knights Crossing Invitational Preview Brandon Miles Sep 15, 2006

Northside senior and defending AA state champion Catherine White opens her season tomorrow at the Knights Cross Invitational held at Green Hill Park in Salem. High expections are placed upon White this season as she was a three-time All-American last year in cross country and track including a national runner-up finish for two miles last indoor season at Nike Indoor Nationals. White has had some great performances at Green Hill in the past including a 17:57 5K at the Fab 5K last month. The meet will also feature one of the state\'s top girls teams in Blacksburg. A great individual battle should be waged between one of A\'s best in Nathan Brame of Radford and the #3 ranked individual in AA in Peter Dorrell of Blacksburg.

Brentsville girls and White only looking better in 2006 Brandon Miles Aug 21, 2006

Predictability is a word that serves Group AA girls well this fall with the Brentsville girls returning a full squad from a team that simply dominated at the state meet last year and two-time individual state champion Catherine White looking fitter than ever heading into this season. Behind Brentsville and White, there are plenty of great teams and individuals filling out what should be a strong fall for Group AA.

White off to blazing start at Fab 5K Brandon Miles Aug 20, 2006

If her time at the Fab 5K is any indication of what it is to come from Catherine White in her senior season at Northside High School, this could be a very special year for the three-time All-American and nine-time AA state champion. In last year\'s Fab 5K, White clocked a swift 18:30 and bettered her time by over 30 seconds in this year\'s race as the top finishing female in the open division in 17:57. White finished out last fall\'s cross country season winning the AA state title in 17:57, qualifying for Foot Locker Nationals with a 17:17 PR run at Foot Locker South, and an All-American finish at Foot Locker Nationals in 17:53 on a challenging Balboa Park course in San Diego, California. Already 30 seconds ahead of herself from last year is a great sign for things to come.

Athlete Spotlight: Catherine White Brandon Miles Mar 21, 2006

Quietly, Catherine White of Northside is becoming one of the greatest female distance runners ever to come out of the state of Virginia. While the junior from Roanoke certainly has been overshadowed just within her own classification at Group AA prior to this year with the likes of national champion miler and 800 meter run Sarah Bowman, a national runner-up performance at the Nike Indoor Nationals two mile two weekends ago certainly showed she is now the crown jewel of the Virginia distance running scene. A two-time state cross country champion and a Foot Locker All-American this past December, White has taken her running to another level this track season with two Group AA state meet record breaking performances earlier this month. One of the records belonged to Miss Bowman of Fauquier, the nation\'s high school track athlete of the year last spring and national record holder at 1000 meters. The other belonged to Shannon Saunders, who starred at Jefferson Forest and now currently runs at James Madison University where she has qualified for NCAA\'s on multiple occassions. With an outdoor season and full senior season to go, White has the opportunity to join an elite class of Virginia distance greats and surpass quite a few as well.
