Tyrese Cooper owns multiple freshman national records, but now he can add high school national record holder to his resume. The sophomore opened up his 2017 indoor campaign with a 33.03s 300m dash at the VA Showcase, .02 faster than the previous record held by LSU's Michael Cherry. MGX coach Darius Lawshea told us earlier this week the pair's goals aren't to just rewrite the sophomore class records, but to go after senior and world records as well. "He really got out fast and finished strong. I think he could have ran 32 if he hadn't screamed coming off the curve like the Hulk," Lawshea told us after the race. Well, "Smoke" this isn't a bad way to start the year. Earlier in the day he ran a US#4 time of 6.38 to win his heat of the prelims and he still hasn't done. Lawshea told me Friday morning that he will also contest the field at 500m.
The biggest event of the year both by numbers and a scary high level of talent, is finally here. The VA Showcase will take place this Friday and Saturday on Liberty University's brand new $30,000,000 hydraulically banking track.
Biggest moments from this weekend in high school track and field
Last March at New Balance Nationals Indoor, North Rockland beat out Lake Braddock 11:34.85 to 11:39.10 to set a new national high school record in the DMR. Lake Braddock wasn't happy about it but with all four girls returning to the track in 2017, they knew they had a strong shot to break the record this year. It turns out they didn't have to wait for nationals as all four legs were raring to go at the VA Showcase and they combined for a final time of 11:34.54 to just slightly edge out the old record! Here's the national record splits:1200m - 3:41 (Shannon Browning)400m - 59 (Skyla Davidson)800m - 2:16 (Samantha Schwers)1600m - 4:37 (Kate Murphy)

Meet management is excited to announce that for the first time in United States history, Team Jamaica will send a high school relay team to compete indoors. This team, St. Jago (St. Catherine, JAM) is one of the most storied powerhouses on the island and has won the Girls' ISSA Champs four times. They are also one of only two high schools to have won both the Boys' and Girls' Championships in a single year.
So we know St. Jago, and really any Jamaican team, will bring the heat but they are not the only team in this race. Also slated to compete in this race and more specifically the top section of this race is current US #1 Western Branch, The Bullis School, and Grassfield. All three of these American teams are 1:37.5 or better teams.
